A Tribute to Lyndia Hendry

On December 5th, Lyndia Hendry passed away peacefully in the place that mattered most to her–Cedar Haven. This ~95-acre property has been the site of many of A Rocha Ontario’s programs, events, and projects, thanks to Lyndia and Bill Hendry’s generous offer to share their farm. Lyndia was being cared for by her son Jeff, tenant and friend Kathy and PSWs.

A Rocha had the humbling privilege of working alongside Lyndia and her late husband, Bill, to steward Cedar Haven over the years. This short tribute cannot adequately describe the uniqueness of Lyndia and Bill as stewards of God’s creation.

When visiting Cedar Haven, you knew Lyndia wanted you to “just pop by” or “drop-in” to say hello. She loved keeping a close eye on young A Rocha staff who were just learning the ropes of conservation or education. Her encouragement to these folks often culminated in quick-witted quips to “hire that person before they get scooped up”!

Her heart was oriented around seeing kids enjoy the wonder and beauty of God’s creation. She loved hearing the giggling and shouting down by the pond or in the trees next to her home.

I joked with Lyndia that she was our best promoter, and I would have given her an official role too–had she let me. Anytime I looked at a Facebook post and went to press the “like” button, you could guarantee that Lyndia would have got there first.

She was an endless stream of ideas and energy. Whether it was the rhubarb social or encouragement to plant a teaching garden, we could count on Lyndia for 100% investment and commitment.

Even until the end, she was as bright as you can imagine. She said, “I’m not sad, and I have a few more things to do and people to connect with before I go.” She knew God was with her and that she would get to be with Bill again.

A Rocha is fortunate to steward the incredible legacy of Lyndia and Bill at Cedar Haven. Much more could be shared to honour Lyndia, so please read about her and Bill’s vision for Cedar Haven by clicking the links below.

Lyndia’s celebration of life took place on Tuesday, December 10, at 11 am. Here is her official Obituary.

If you never had the chance to meet Lyndia or Bill, we were given the opportunity to record and share their vision and story. You may enjoy reading the Story Behind Cedar Haven and more recently learning about Lyndia’s updated vision here.
