A Rocha Intern Anica Burianyk has spent the last month on the prowl for Red-legged Frogs (Rana aurora aurora). Red-legged Frogs are nationally listed as Special Concern by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC), are on the provincial Blue List, and are protected under the British Columbia Wildlife Act. Because their distribution in the Lower Fraser Valley is poorly understood, Anica is undertaking her survey to increase distribution data for the Little Campbell River Watershed. By focusing on surveys of egg masses she will be able to assess the relationships between Red-legged Frogs and other factors, such as the presence of other amphibians and habitat characteristics. In addition to providing valuable data, Anica’s project will serve as a pilot study for other science interns to follow.
