As Community Organizer in Winnipeg, Jen Kornelsen helps churches and community groups link people with food, community and creation. She is excited by the momentum building for this kind of outreach as a strong network of people in Winnipeg work to increase food security for their most vulnerable neighbours. She has recently launched a pilot project in partnership with St. Margaret’s Anglican Church. This initiative, called Just Growing, will create several gardens in the church’s neighbourhood where low-income participants will be involved in growing their own food. As a springboard to this initiative, Jen has been hosting a six-week study for the parish called Food and Faith. Discussion is lively as participants consider such themes as fair and free trade food and eating locally-grown. Jen is looking forward to how the Just Growing project will facilitate two weeks of summer day camps, helping kids integrate Bible stories and creation care. The culmination of the gardening, workshops and summer day camps will be the creation of a practical manual that churches and other community groups can use to start their own community gardens and creation-care outreach projects. Please contact Jen at jen.kornelsen@arocha.ca for more information.
