Across Canada like-minded gardeners are partnering with A Rocha to create community gardens in their local neighbourhoods. The Hill Street Community Garden is one such garden and is a member of A Rocha’s Community Garden network. A small but determined group of garden organizers, including former (and beloved!) A Rocha staff Jessica Brouwer, secured the use of a large patch of empty green space owned by the City of Hamilton and led a team of faithful volunteers through a successful season of planting, weeding and harvesting. That once empty plot of grass has turned into a thriving community garden that not only produces copious amounts of vegetables, but has also been a catalyst for a bona fide sense of community. Five local churches have partnered on the garden: First Hamilton Christian Reformed Church (lead partner), St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church, Central Presbyterian Church, First Unitarian Church, and New City Church. The garden is also endorsed by the area Kirkendall, Strathcona and Durand neighbourhood associations. To learn more about our Community Garden Network, click here.
