UrbanPromise is a nonprofit that works with at-risk or low income children grades 1-7. As part of our inner-city day camp, we were excited to bring over 90 city kids for a two separate days of environmental education at the A Rocha Field Study Centre in Surrey, BC. A lot of our campers come from single parent homes where the summer may consist of staying home by themselves and playing video games while mom or dad works. For the kids to be able to examine bugs, trees, and birds up close is an experience they will carry with them for a long time to come. On the bus ride home, some of the Grade 5 girls said their favorite part of the day was picking through the compost. “I had a handful of worms!” one of them said happily. They also enjoyed tromping through the forest looking for clues to the nature hunt and writing in their nature journals. At the end of the day, they all had a hard time saying goodbye to the chickens and the cows and the wonderful garden. Thanks A Rocha for allowing our kids to experience creation!
