A Rocha Canada is partnering with World Vision Canadian Projects to connect with single parent families on low income in Surrey and White Rock. In our project, Connecting Families to Food, Community and Creation (publicized as Food Fun for Families), A Rocha is offering workshops and drop-in days where we strive to model sustainable living and teach about cooking and healthy eating.
Sadly, the most affordable food for folks on a slim budget is often the least healthy. Highly processed, salt and sugar saturated foods are more easily accessed than a healthy diet based on fruits and vegetables. Through Food Fun for Families, we hope to assist and inspire folks to access and prepare wholesome foods in a fun community setting. From meeting the animals on the farm to pulling veggies from the garden to preparing a delicious meal, we hope to make learning about our food an engaging experience.
We have an excellent team working on the project: Paul Neufled is the farm manager, Ruth Des Cotes is our environmental and food educator, Ute Lindenlauf is the cook and Roxy Humphrey the outreach coordinator. We completed our two month pilot phase of the project at the end of March, where we enjoyed engagement with 7 families and a number of foster children new to A Rocha.
A Rocha’s Food Fun for Families project will continue over the next few years; if you or anyone you know is interested in learning more, please contact Shauna Anderson at shauna.anderson@arocha.ca.
