“Weather is often something to talk about when we have nothing to say, but today weather is the main subject so we will skip the small talk entirely.” And with that A Rocha summer student, Amilia Fehr, kicked off last week’s event: The Heart of the Storm.

It was an evening of stories, snacks, and the launch of a new resource for the Pembina Valley developed by Amilia during her summer research project. All summer she studied weather patterns in the Pembina Valley and condensed her findings into The Outdoorsman’s Guide to Predicting Weather in the Pembina Valley.

The evening also featured Francis Lavigne-Theriault from Near Zero Probability Chasers sharing how and why he became a storm chaser, what is involved in storm chasing, and how others can get involved. With a summer where Southern Manitoba has seen frequent storms, many were glad his talk also included how to be safe around storms and what to do when a big storm takes place.

(If you get a chance we encourage you to visit the Near Zero Probability Chasers website for high-quality photos, videos & a documentary on storm chasing!)

After the presentations folks lingered and mingled a while longer to swap stories about the storms they’ve experienced over snacks & coffee. All in all it was a grand opportunity to talk about the weather!
