Preaching for God’s World
Preaching for God’s World is a resource for preachers, offering thoughts and reflections on each Sunday’s Revised Common Lectionary readings viewed through the lens of the Anglican Five Marks of Mission – in particular, caring for people and planet.
The Five Marks of Mission express the Anglican understanding of what it means to live faithfully and holistically in the world. They reflect Jesus’ mission to bring good news to the poor, release for the oppressed and fullness of life to all (Luke 4:18; John 10:10) and humanity’s role to “tend and keep” the earth (Genesis 2:15).
A Rocha International is a contributing partner in this initiative.
Other Resources and References
For Christians the principle of sustainability is an old idea. The roots of sustainability are anchored in the Holy Bible but in many cases forgotten in the daily life. The internet platform “Sustainable Preaching“ reminds us of these roots – and the responsibility connected to them. To translate this into action we want to build up an international network.
Since 2005, “Sustainable Preaching” has been offering ecumenical preaching suggestions and a new dynamic to align the Bible readings into the global context of sustainability in daily life and action. Creation care has obviously an ethical and spiritual dimension.
The ecumenical project »sustainable preaching« wants to carry out the idea of living networks by sharing informations, hopes, visions of social and ecologic justice, supported by the power of Christian faith, love, and with respect to all creatures. With peace in the heart climate protection and biodiversity become a challenge of fulfillment and hopeful creativity, shared with people all over the world.
By Interfaith Center for Sustainable Development
In an effort to encourage clergy to preach and teach on Christian ecology at least once a month, the Interfaith Center for Sustainable Development and the Rev. Dr. Leah Schade have partnered to develop a new free resource called EcoPreacher 1-2-3. Drawing from Eco Bible, a Jewish ecological commentary on the Hebrew Scriptures, Dr. Schade, author of Creation-Crisis Preaching: Ecology, Theology and the Pulpit (Chalice Press, 2015), provides sermon preparation for preaching about caring for God’s Creation that is short, accessible, and based on a solid biblical foundation.
EcoPreacher 1-2-3 offers a brief “eco-exegesis” for interpreting a Hebrew text from the Revised Common Lectionary for that Sunday. This is followed by one “eco idea” for the basis of the sermon, two “eco questions” to go deeper, and three “eco actions” to choose from to help a congregation put their faith into action. With this resource, preachers can use the sermon ideas in their own context and make it relevant for their congregation.
Worship in the Season of Creation and Earth-Themed Sundays
Green congregations around the world celebrate the Season of Creation, emphasize earth keeping throughout the Christian Year and plan other earth-themed Sundays.
Green Congregations Celebrate God’s New Creation in Worship
Christians often remind each other that worship is more about God’s beauty and glory than about us.
Both articles include links to extra resources and discussion guides.
“Let All Creation Praise” offers resources for congregations to celebrate God’s love for creation, to worship God with creation so as to reconcile and restore our human relationship with the rest of nature, and to foster love and care for God’s whole creation. The platform also provide resources to celebrate a “season of creation” or “creation time” in the church year.
Lutherans Restoring Creation is a grassroots movement promoting care for creation in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
Based in Lower Mainland BC, Salal + Cedar is a community of support and action to help Christians live out our vocation for environmental justice.
