For the second year running Hillside Baptist Church, located in North Vancouver, B.C., celebrated Earth Day with a variety of creative activities. During Sunday School, children planted a vegetable garden (made all the more fun by the large number of worms added to enrich the soil!). After the service, church members received energy-saving lightbulbs donated by BC Hydro. In addition, a computer-related and battery recycling drive kept copious amounts of toxic chemical out of landfills. The morning sermon was conducted in interview style with pastor Charis Weathers discussing issues of faith and the environment with Stanley Martin, Chair of A Rocha’s Board, and ZoAnn Morten, Program Coordinator for the Pacific Streamkeepers Federation. In observing Earth Day the church aimed to increase awareness of God’s concern for His creation, and our responsibility to join with God in stewarding it well.
