7:00 pm Creation Care in Precarity: Challenges and Opportunities for Environmental Action in Malawi with Vivian and Blair Bertrand

Regardless of the metric, the small but populous central African country Malawi is ranked among the poorest in the world. With a land mass totaling approximately the size of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, the 21 million people put extreme pressure on the land for survival. At the same time, Malawi has a large number of Christians. How can they faithfully respond to the acute environmental crisis they face (but have not necessarily created) and continue to advocate for the poorest of the poor?

Vivian and Blair Bertrand lived in Malawi from 2017-2020. Vivian worked for an NGO called Churches Action Relief Development (CARD) and for the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC). She currently works for Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC). Blair continues to work for Zomba Theological University as a Senior Lecturer. They live in Barrhaven with two of their children (Sage 15, Zoe 10) while their third is studying biology at Simon Fraser University (Garrett, 18).

Please RSVP paul.heintzman@arocha.ca to let us know if you will be attending and what you will be bringing for the potluck supper.
