Come care for creation at the A Rocha Ontario Centre!

This month we will be spading Phragmites!

You’ve heard of Phragmites. You see it growing in the ditches and roadsides. An invasive wetland grass that grows up to 5 metres tall, it aggressively destroys local ecosystems by forming dense monocultures, depleting water levels, and releasing toxins that kill surrounding plants.

At this volunteer morning you will learn more about how invasive Phragmites is managed and take part in a morning of spading – digging it out to reduce its spread through the wetland at the Ontario Centre and make room for beneficial native plant communities.

Wear weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy shoes for working outdoors. Bring a water bottle and work gloves if you have them.

Tools and equipment are provided.

An optional lunch will be provided following the volunteer activities. It will be a simple vegetarian meal (e.g. soup or salad, depending on the season). We would love to have you stay for food and conversation!

Adults and families are welcome to participate. Please note that children must be accompanied by an adult.
