This past fall A Rocha staff member Cindy Verbeek, A Rocha supporter Margaret Letkeman, along with other local volunteers received two days of Streamkeepers training from the Pacific Streamkeepers Foundation’s Zo-ann Morten.Zo-ann, also a member of the A Rocha Conservation Science Advisory Board, led the group through the first 4 modules of Streamkeepers program with a vision to having trained Streamkeepers in Houston and the surrounding area. As a result of this training, the newly formed Houston Streamkeepers group participated in beaver dam management to provide access to Coho salmon trapped up-stream and Fulton Coho broodstock capture to provide Coho eggs to the Topley, Granisle, and BurnsLake area schools for their Stream to Sea Program. This winter they hope to assist the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada with over-winter trapping. Cindy Verbeek is also working on a children’s book called There’s a Salmon in My Classroom! which can be used in the Stream to Sea program. For more information about the group’s activities or advice on how to get involved in streamkeeping efforts in your local watershed, please contact Cindy at cindy.verbeek@arocha.ca.
