Project Description
Nestbox Monitoring
Over the past 7 years, A Rocha Ontario has been supporting nestbox monitoring in our area, particularly at the former Cedar Haven Eco-Centre. We provided nesting sites for birds like the Eastern Bluebird, Tree Swallow and House Wren. The Bluebird and Tree Swallow are cavity nesters and placing nest boxes on the landscape gives them more nesting options. It also allowed us to monitor the whole process. A Rocha staff followed the journey from building a nest, to laying eggs, seeing young hatch and then fledge (leave) the nest. This data gave A Rocha insight into which nestboxes are placed well and different trends for species nesting success over time.
Our monitoring efforts have now expanded throughout our region with Project NEST. As well, we look forward to beginning nestbox monitoring work at the new A Rocha Ontario Centre.
