A Rocha recently partnered with the Canadian Wildlife Service and the Desert Cultural Centre in Osoyoos, BC on a unique snake research project. While studying slithering reptiles isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, it was a dream project for A Rocha’s Science Horizons intern, Anica Burianyk, who spent much of August and September hiking through the desert of inland BC looking for Rattlesnakes and Gophersnakes. Once found, each snake was outfitted with a radio-transmitter and tracked daily until their hibernation in the fall. By learning exactly where these snakes go, what they do and what they need to survive, the data collected allows conservationists to work more effectively with developers for solutions that benefit all parties.
