The Pembina Valley Interpretive Centre (PVIC) is excited have Leanna Fehr and Amilia Fehr (no relation) on our staff team this summer. Both women are university students and are gaining valuable skills and training as they put their studies to work in the service of Interpretive Centre.
Amilia, training to be a missionary pilot, chose to create a Hiker’s Guide to Weather in the Pembina Valley. She explains, “As a pilot, I’m constantly watching the weather as it changes and making predictions about what it might do. I thought this would be handy knowledge for hikers.” The guide represents another way to be aware of creation. Additionally, the guide will help visitors better understand how our valley affects weather systems.
Leanna is an environmental science student and is studying the plants on the PVIC property. The goal of the project is to learn about the abundance and health of plant species at the PVIC. Leanna says, “It was exciting to find nine young elms growing in the eco-unit I studied although I know they are likely to become diseased as they grow older. However, the largest elm I measured had a circumference of 32cm and I am hopeful that it may be resilient to the disease as it has survived this long!” This has been a pilot year for the project, which will continue in coming years in collaboration with Canadian Mennonite University and local experts in order to give other students experience in field work.
Amilia and Leanna are just two of the nearly twenty young people working or interning with A Rocha in BC, Manitoba and Ontario this summer. For each, caring for creation in practical ways in producing transformation not only in their lives but in the work of A Rocha across Canada.
