Cedar Haven Farm, Hamilton
The farm contains several unique ecological features. Beverly Swamp is a provincially significant wetland and the source of 3 local watersheds. Cedar Haven is also home to other wetlands, including a Cedar Swamp, which join and form the headwaters of Bronte Creek which eventually flows into Lake Ontario. The grasslands, forests, and wetlands create a diverse ecosystem. Surveys using provincial Ecological landscape classification measures have identified 26 ecotypes on the property!
One of the most exciting discoveries of our surveys has been the provincially rare plant species Narrow-leaved Mountain Mint (Pycnanthemum tenuifolium). This plant produces beautiful flowers which attract pollinators such as butterflies and bees, and its leaves have a strong mint scent and taste. A Rocha staff members are working on a large-scale restoration project for Cedar Haven farm that includes protecting and propagating this unique plant.

Don River Watershed & Oak Ridges Moraine, Greater Toronto Area
A Rocha is working with partners to conserve natural heritage on the Oak Ridges Moraine, especially with the Oak Ridges Moraine Land Trust at its StarCliff Nature Reserve. Home to a kettle lake and designated a protected Provincially Significant Wetland and a Natural Core Area in Ontario’s provincial Greenbelt, StarCliff provides significant habitats for a wide variety of migratory and resident species. One such species is the monarch butterfly; a species of ‘Special Concern’ because of its notable loss of habitat. The Moraine is the headwaters of several rivers that flow through the Greater Toronto Area, south into Lake Ontario and north into Lake Simcoe and Lake Scugog. Conserving these ecologically significant lands benefits downstream ecosystems and is an essential part of protecting the region’s primary drinking water sources–Lake Ontario and Lake Simcoe.Contact us to connect with A Rocha’s activities in the GTA.
