Backyard Eggs

There’s nothing quite like a farm-fresh egg in the morning – well… nothing except eggs fresh from your own backyard!

For years, A Rocha has been providing high-quality eggs from our pastured flocks in Surrey, BC. Today the farm team is working to develop the flock’s genetics. We’re cross-breeding the best performing birds to meet a more sustainable production system.

We now offer heritage birds for folks looking to produce home-grown eggs in your own backyard!

Breeding Quality Birds

Minimal Grain Feed: Historically, poultry were more self-sufficient – eating bugs, grass, crop residues and damaged fruit. You could say they turned food people couldn’t eat into eggs and meat. One of our goals is to reclaim hardy foraging genetics that can take advantage of free range opportunities. Whether foraging in a backyard lot or a 50 acre farm, free-range birds reduce feed costs and still lay 200-250 eggs a year.

Self Replication: A good mother hen can hatch out eggs at a higher success rate. She can also keep her chicks outdoors and eating live, natural foods from day one. We breed to retain mothering instincts, which is valuable if you want a self-sustaining flock.

What We Offer

Birds You Can Raise

Our own “landrace” of productive dual-purpose heritage hens crossed with our Old English Game roosters, to develop broodiness instincts and hardiness. Hatching eggs, day-old chicks and ready-to-lay pullets available on pre-order basis in February-October. Contact us to purchase.
Pilgrim Geese are medium sized breed of goose, laying approximately 35 eggs/year. They are good mothers, able to hatch a clutch of 8-11 goslings each spring. Hatching eggs available on pre-order basis in March-April. Contact us to purchase.
Our ducks lay large, rich eggs very consistently and are better winter layers than chickens. The breed, Silver Appleyard, is a Heritage breed developed in the UK to produce a fine meat bird. These ducks lay 200 – 250 eggs a year. Hatching eggs, day-old ducklings, and ready-to-lay birds available on pre-order basis in April-September. Contact us to purchase.
