DESCRIPTION:For a number of years A Rocha has participated in the North American Christmas Bird Count at our centre in East Braintree. This year we invite families to participate in a kid-friendly bird count right here in Winnipeg! You are welcome to this event whether you are a seasoned birder\, or just starting out. \nInspired by the well-loved\, traditional Christmas Bird Count\, the CBC4Kids engages new generations of young birders across North America.\nOur observations will be collected and submitted to eBird Canada for use in scientific research! \nWe will gather outside at 215 Canora St. (across from Vimy Ridge Park in Wolseley) and take a leisurely stroll through the neighbourhood to see what kinds of birds we can spot. Counts happen in over 2000 localities throughout the Western Hemisphere. \nThe information collected by thousands of volunteer participants forms one of the world’s largest sets of wildlife survey data. The results are used daily by conservation biologists and naturalists to assess the population trends and distribution of birds. \nEach Christmas Bird Count is conducted on a single day between December 14 and January 5. Counts are carried out within a 24-km diameter circle that stays the same from year to year. They are organized\, usually as group efforts\, at the local level\, often by a birding club or naturalist organization. \nThis is a great opportunity to explore the birds that we have in and around the Boreal Ecology Centre and engage people in conducting citizen science. This is part of the work that we want to take on in order to promote connections at the Boreal Ecology Centre that can contribute to conservation.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a peaceful Winter Solstice Walk on Sunday\, December 21st from 6pm – 8pm at the A Rocha Ontario Centre (1440 Westover Road\, Millgrove\, ON).\nFor many Indigenous peoples\, the winter solstice marks a sacred moment to honour the natural rhythms of creation when plants and animals rest and people\, too\, rest and renew their spirits. At this event\, we’ll enjoy a family-friendly walk in the early night followed by tea and shared stories around the campfire. Bring your own lantern to light the path.
