DESCRIPTION:The John Stott memorial birding day is a global one-day event run by A Rocha on May 14\, 2022 to commemorate and celebrate A Rocha’s great friend and supporter John Stott’s legacy as a theologian\, pastor and birdwatcher in his centenary year. Whether you are a novice or an expert birder\, we invite you to join friends old and new to head into the great outdoors and enjoy the birds wherever you are in God’s good creation. For more information on this day check out the John Stott Birding Day website. \nA Rocha Manitoba will be heading out to the Boreal Ecology Centre for the day to do some recreational birding\, have an outdoor picnic lunch together\, and walk the trails.  \nWhen: May 14\, 2021 – 9 am – 5 pm (although you are welcome to come earlier!)\nWhere: Boreal Ecology Centre (East Braintree\, MB) \nOur aim will be to walk as many of the trails on the property as we can\, so be sure to come equipped with proper hiking gear. SUMMARY:2022 Bird Blitz (Houston\, BC)
DESCRIPTION:Join local birders to count as many species of birds as we can in a 48 hour period. Count birds at your feeders\, on your walks\, during your activities or at an official A Rocha event and report them to the “2022 Bird Blitz Houston BC” project on iNaturalist: https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/2022-bird-blitz-houston-bc \nA Rocha Events: \nFriday\, May 27 \n12:01 am – Let the counting begin. \n6 pm – Duck Pond “Learn to Bird” walk. \nBring your family and meet at the dock at the Duck Pond for this family friendly guided interpretive walk to learn how to identify birds by sight and sound. \nSaturday\, May 28 \n7 am – Bird Nerds Unite \nBirders meet at the Nature Centre to create teams and coordinate locations for the day. (The team with the most recorded species will win a prize.) \n10 am – 3 pm Birds of a Feather Scavenger Hunt \nVisit the Nature Centre at any time to join in on a Feather Scavenger Hunt and learn all about birds in the Bulkley Valley. \n6 pm – Wrap-up Campfire \nJoin us for a campfire at the Nature Centre to tally the count for the day\, find out who wins the prize for the most species counted and hear stories of birding in the Bulkley Valley by local bird watchers. \n12:00 Midnight – Last records accepted for official count.

SUMMARY:Volunteer Day (Boreal Ecology Centre) - Quadrats
DESCRIPTION:WHO: You! We’re looking for willing volunteers with a keen understanding of maps and measurement.\nWHAT: Graham (Conservation Science Coordinator) along with a group of volunteers will be spending the day setting up monitoring sites\, called quadrats\, in various places around The Boreal Ecology Centre property.\nWHERE: The Boreal Ecology Centre\, 81025 Boggy River Rd.\, East Braintree\, MB\nWHEN: Saturday\, May 28\, arriving between 9 and 10 AM\, departing between 3 and 5 PM\nWHY: See Graham’s recent blog post about quadrats – it’s a great explanation of the importance of quadrats.\nWHAT TO BRING:\n\nEssentials: bag lunch (snacks\, waterbottle etc.)\, work boots and gloves\, bug spray and sunscreen\, binoculars\nOptional (bring it to share if you have it): GPS\, compass\, tape measure\, mallet\, coloured markers and pencils\, tree corer\, any relevant plant/animal ID books\nWe are also looking for donations of rebar and cedar stakes – if you have these items and are willing to part with them\, email Graham. \n\n\nRSVP: Fill out the form below to register. DESCRIPTION:Join A Rocha’s Brooksdale conservation team for a morning of habitat restoration and enhancement.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet your hands dirty planting native trees and shrubs\, removing invasive vegetation (such as Himalayan blackberry or English Ivy) and much more. \nThe team will meet at Brooksdale Environmental Centre (1620 192 St – Surrey\, BC) and will travel to the restoration site from there. All ages welcome to participate! Please bring your own pair of gloves and water; tools and other equipment will be provided. \nHope to see you there!!
