With a land mass totaling approximately the size of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia\, the 21 million people put extreme pressure on the land for survival. At the same time\, Malawi has a large number of Christians. How can they faithfully respond to the acute environmental crisis they face (but have not necessarily created) and continue to advocate for the poorest of the poor? \nVivian and Blair Bertrand lived in Malawi from 2017-2020. Vivian worked for an NGO called Churches Action Relief Development (CARD) and for the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC). She currently works for Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC). Please also bring what you feel you need to hike winter trails (snow pants\, hiking poles\, etc.) \nHere’s what Birds Canada has to say about their Christmas Bird Count:  \nStarted in 1900\, the Christmas Bird Count is North America’s longest-running Citizen Science project. Counts happen in over 2000 localities throughout the Western Hemisphere. \nThe information collected by thousands of volunteer participants forms one of the world’s largest sets of wildlife survey data. The results are used daily by conservation biologists and naturalists to assess the population trends and distribution of birds. \nEach Christmas Bird Count is conducted on a single day between December 14 and January 5. Counts are carried out within a 24-km diameter circle that stays the same from year to year.
