Counts happen in over 2000 localities throughout the Western Hemisphere. \nThe information collected by thousands of volunteer participants forms one of the world’s largest sets of wildlife survey data. The results are used daily by conservation biologists and naturalists to assess the population trends and distribution of birds. \nEach Christmas Bird Count is conducted on a single day between December 14 and January 5. Counts are carried out within a 24-km diameter circle that stays the same from year to year. They are organized\, usually as group efforts\, at the local level\, often by a birding club or naturalist organization. \nThis is a great opportunity to explore the birds that we have in and around the Boreal Ecology Centre and engage people in conducting citizen science. This is part of the work that we want to take on in order to promote connections at the Boreal Ecology Centre that can contribute to conservation.

DESCRIPTION:For a number of years A Rocha has participated in the North American Christmas Bird Count at our centre in East Braintree. This year we invite families to participate in a kid-friendly bird count right here in Winnipeg! You are welcome to this event whether you are a seasoned birder\, or just starting out. \nInspired by the well-loved\, traditional Christmas Bird Count\, the CBC4Kids engages new generations of young birders across North America.\nOur observations will be collected and submitted to eBird Canada for use in scientific research! \nWe will gather outside at 215 Canora St. (across from Vimy Ridge Park in Wolseley) and take a leisurely stroll through the neighbourhood to see what kinds of birds we can spot. DESCRIPTION:This Month’s Church Earthkeepers: Let’s Learn \nHave you ever found yourself in a conversation about environmental issues that felt more like an argument than a productive dialogue? Talking about climate change and biodiversity loss is one of the most important things we can do to address these big challenges\, but why do conversations about ecological issues routinely produce more heat than light even though we all rely on clean air\, water\, and soil? Caring for creation has never been more important. Biblically speaking\, humans are made to care for God’s world and at the same time we’re often overwhelmed by evidence of creation’s groaning. And yet\, simply talking about our concern for earthkeeping is often very challenging. \nThis webinar will focus on skills that equip us for constructive dialogue about contentious topics like biodiversity loss\, climate change\, and pollution. Even big changes usually begin in the midst of ordinary conversations. Join us as we learn how to interact in ways that foster trust\, identify common ground\, and build momentum towards shared goals. \nWhat to Expect: Practical training in how to have constructive dialogue about contentious topics. \nNote: All registrants will receive a link to the recording as well as follow up materials. \nAbout our speaker: \nMarta Bunnett Wiebe works for Mennonite Central Committee Manitoba as the Peace & Advocacy Program Coordinator. In that role she facilitates workshops on conflict resolution and leads conversation and action on climate change. But is the good news that Christians believe in\, relevant to these times? We will explore how it is\, and what it means for some of the most impoverished human communities and the threatened ecosystems that sustain them.\n \n“The good news of Jesus is meant to be written in the landscapes and not just in people’s lives.” – Peter Harris\n \n\n— \nAbout Peter Harris \nPeter and his late wife Miranda founded A Rocha\, a family of conservation organizations in over 20 countries working together to live out God’s calling to care for creation\, in 1983. The A Rocha story is told in Peter’s books\, Under the Bright Wings and Kingfisher’s Fire. A Cambridge graduate and Anglican minister\, Peter has served as Adjunct Faculty at Regent College\, Vancouver and Au Sable Institute\, Michigan. In his retirement\, he continues to serve A Rocha as a volunteer\, developing ways to create jobs and wealth and improve the environment instead of overexploiting it. DESCRIPTION:What can churches do to care for creation?\nJoin A Rocha Ontario\, True City and St. Cuthbert’s Church on Saturday\, October 18th for our joint event “Churches Caring for Creation – Idea Exchange.” \nBuilding from last year’s event\, we are inviting you to join us to explore and discuss how Christian communities and their leaders can get involved with creation care. More people are becoming interested in making creation care part of the way they serve God and neighbour\, but sometimes it can be hard to know where to start or where to go next on this journey. So join us for an afternoon of inspiration\, conversation\, and encouragement!  At this event\, we’ll hear stories and insights from experienced panelists from different congregations. Cindy seeks to empower people to bear the image of Creator God as we enact justice in every area of our lives\, from how we shop\, to how we talk to our neighbours\, to how our communities respond to the most vulnerable. She can often be found reading a good book around a campfire\, or watching a BBC miniseries with her cats and a cup of tea. Her favourite colour is sparkle. \nMarcée Lane\nAs a pastor at Forestview\, Marcée and her church want people to meet Jesus and become more like him. One of the ways that they seek to do this is by loving creation better. In the past\, Forestview had a beekeeping ministry and currently\, they partner with A Rocha Ontario by hosting three bird boxes as part of Project NEST. Forestview also founded an outreach in Burlington called Next Door Social Space (NDSS) that includes Rolling Horse Community Cycle and Next Door Community Kitchen. NDSS is an expression of Forestview’s creation care because it refurbishes old bikes\, promotes green transportation\, and uses rescued food & community gardens to create meals for the community. \nRob Miller\nRob Miller is an Anglican Missioner-Priest to the city of Hamilton. He works with ecclesial communities to nurture their appreciation of place and capacity for presence. The beginnings of both The Community of Common Prayer and the Saint Luke’s Mission are associated with his leadership. Presently\, he is interested in the phenomena of repentance\, mercy\, and gratitude; movements of the heart he considers essential in the pursuit of hospitality. Living in the North end of Hamilton with his family\, Rob spends his days walking\, reading\, and playing the fiddle.

SUMMARY:EarthKeepers Club (October 2025)
DESCRIPTION:The EarthKeepers Club is a space for youth (ages 11-17) to connect with others their age that have similar interests in the environment and conservation. An example of a typical day might look like a work project to remove invasive species in the morning\, followed by a discussion over lunch about what it means to be a good steward\, and wrapping up by catching and identifying dragonflies in the afternoon. Through this program\, we aim to make a tangible impact and have fun along the way! \nThe EarthKeepers Club currently has no cost to join and runs from April-October\, usually on the second Saturday of each month. We are able to offer 3 volunteer hours for high school students that participate in a program day. This is the last meeting of the 2025 season. \nRegistration\nBook your ticket to let us know you’re coming!
