Counts happen in over 2000 localities throughout the Western Hemisphere. \nThe information collected by thousands of volunteer participants forms one of the world’s largest sets of wildlife survey data. The results are used daily by conservation biologists and naturalists to assess the population trends and distribution of birds. \nEach Christmas Bird Count is conducted on a single day between December 14 and January 5. Counts are carried out within a 24-km diameter circle that stays the same from year to year. They are organized\, usually as group efforts\, at the local level\, often by a birding club or naturalist organization. \nThis is a great opportunity to explore the birds that we have in and around the Boreal Ecology Centre and engage people in conducting citizen science. This is part of the work that we want to take on in order to promote connections at the Boreal Ecology Centre that can contribute to conservation.

SUMMARY:Churches Caring for Creation - An Idea Exchange (Hamilton\, ON)
DESCRIPTION:What can churches do to care for creation?\nChristian communities and their leaders are increasingly interested in making creation care a part of the way they serve God and neighbour. At a time of significant polarization and high anxiety\, this isn’t easy. If you would like to hear some of these stories\, stories of what works and what doesn’t\, please join us at St. Cuthbert’s in Westdale (Hamilton\, ON) for a warm afternoon of conversation and encouragement. This event takes place on November 17 from 1:30PM to 3:30PM ET\, and is a collaboration between St. Cuthbert’s\, TrueCity\, and A Rocha Ontario. Anyone interested is welcome to attend–whether you’re in a leadership role or not\, a member of a church or not–please come and join the conversation. \nSchedule\n1:30pm: Welcome & Opening Remarks (including a poetry reading by John Terpstra)\nJohn Terpstra will be reading How it all goes round\, accompanied by Bart Nameth on piano. \n2:00pm: Creation Care Stories with Guest Speakers\nAt this event\, we are excited to welcome guest speakers to open up discussion and share about their creation care experiences. If listing multiple attendees\, please separate names with a comma (ex. John Smith\, Jane Smith).\n\n\nWhat congregation are you from?\n\n\nAny questions or comments?\n\n\n\n\n\nContact Information \n \n \n \nMeet Our Guest Speakers\nDeborah Lindeman\n \nDeborah Lindeman is an avid birdwatcher\, naturalist\, and native plant gardener. She is a member of the Hamilton Naturalists’ Club and volunteers at the Royal Botanical Gardens with their natural land restoration and bird censuses. For the past couple years\, she has participated in the Creation Care group of Trinity Lutheran Church and has used this platform to share her concerns for the preservation and restoration of Hamilton’s natural spaces through articles\, talks\, and birdwatching outings. \nLarry McClung\n \nLarry McClung recently retired from a 44-year career in engineering\, virtually all of which was spent in the fields of energy conservation and renewable energy. Trained at McMaster\, after spending much of his career in Ottawa he now lives in Ancaster\, in a home heated by an air-source heat pump. Some highlights from Larry’s career include designing numerous off-grid solar power systems\, a leading role in the design of the solar-heated Drake Landing Solar Community (Okotoks\, AB\, 2007)\, helping to design Canada’s first Net Zero Energy townhomes (Kanata\, ON\, 2016) and serving as a technical advisor on thousands of MW’s of solar power generation plants across Canada and the United States\, including roughly one-third of the solar power plants now operating in Ontario. \nMark Hartley\n \nWater\, watersheds and all things therein have been an important part of Mark Hartley’s life\, both personally and professionally\, for over 40 years. His life changed dramatically 15 years ago when he started following Christ. As a watershed disciple\, he is passionate about spreading the message (workshops\, discipleship groups) of the immediate need for creation care (delegation\, tragedy\, restoration) and its importance as a gospel issue. \nWayne Poole\n \nWorking in Hamilton-Wentworth Region’s Environment Department in different capacities – water/wastewater lab.\, pollution abatement and pollution prevention outreach – gave Wayne Poole the incentive to continue to promote environmental awareness\, after retirement. \nWayne continued this outreach in his church and formed a group\, the Eco Churches of West Hamilton (EcoWHam)\, with like-minded individuals from other Dundas and West Hamilton churches.  This group collaborated with other environmental organizations – Environment Hamilton\, Hamilton 350\, Environmental Defence\, and others\, to take the environment message to our member congregations\, the Association of Dundas Churches\, and the greater community.  COVID brought about the dissolution of EcoWHam\, but Dundas churches carry on the message of environmental/climate change awareness. \nThe greatest challenge and frustration for Wayne has been climate change denial and indifference\, by so many\, towards this existential threat.

Then join like-minded folks for a Church Earthkeepers Meet-Up. At these monthly sessions we’ll learn from each other by swapping stories as a way to encourage and equip us to catalyze earthkeeping at church. Come prepared to share your ideas and to hear what works for others as we build a network of regular people working to care for creation within a local church setting. \nThese online gatherings will take place the last Tuesday of every month at 5 PM – 6 PM Pacific Time (8 PM – 9 PM Eastern Time). \nThe following are the scheduled dates for the next four months: \n\nAugust 27\nSeptember 24\nOctober 29\nNovember 26\n\n\n\n\n\nDetails including the Zoom link will be available upon registration. \n\n\nBuy Tickets on Eventbrite\n\nBuy Tickets
