SUMMARY:Nature Talk: Back to Eden Film Screening (Winkler\, MB)
DESCRIPTION:The ‘Back to Eden’ film tells the story of Paul Gautschi as he learns techniques for organic gardening. Through this process\, he finds that these lessons help deepen his faith and understand God more clearly. \nPaul moved from California to Washington where he hoped to build a garden to feed his family. However\, he quickly discovered that regardless of his effort he couldn’t grow food there due to a lack of water. This caused Paul to realize the forest continued to thrive when his garden did not. This led him on a journey with God of discovering a new method of gardening that requires less work and inputs while growing healthier produce and soil. \nThe film offers an inspiring take on how gardening can grow both vegetables and faith. Also\, it teaches a method of gardening that requires virtually no watering\, tilling\, fertilizing\, or weeding. \nFor the event\, we will watch the film and then spend some time discussing the topics and themes in small groups. \nThere is no cost to attend the event\, but we will accept donations to help cover the event’s cost. \nWHEN: December 14th\, 2016\, 7:00pm to 9:30pm \nWHERE: Winkler Library’s Multipurpose Room\, 160 Main Street\, Winkler \nFor more information on the film click here.

SUMMARY:Film Premiere: Making Peace With Creation (Vancouver\, BC)
DESCRIPTION:Regent College presents\nA film by Iwan Russell-Jones\nMAKING PEACE WITH CREATION\nwritten & presented\nby\nLOREN WILKINSON\nReserve Tickets Here\nThis is not an A Rocha event. But we thought you might like to know it’s happening! \nPoet and theologian Loren Wilkinson has spent his life thinking\, teaching\, and campaigning about the environment—or creation\, as he prefers to call it. In an era that has seen growing concern about climate change and the impact of industry and technology\, Professor Wilkinson has insisted that this is a critical sphere for Christian thought and action. From their home on Galiano Island off the coast of British Columbia\, he and his wife\, Mary-Ruth Wilkinson\, have encouraged generations of students to think long and hard about the meaning of creation and of our responsibility as creatures within it. \n\nWhat can be done to address the enormous issues facing our fragile and threatened planet?\nIs it possible to live confidently and creatively in the face of massive problems such as pollution and the acidification of the oceans?\nWhat hope is there of making peace with creation?\n\nIn this hour-long film\, made with the assistance of a team of students from Regent College\, Loren Wilkinson goes in search of answers to these pressing questions. Through personal reflections (set both in the beautiful Gulf Islands where he lives and in the urban context of Vancouver\, where he continues to teach)\, stimulating conversations with leading thinkers\, artists and activists\, and specially created art work\, together with extracts from his poetry\, Loren Wilkinson presents his own compelling and beautiful vision for human life in the 21st century. \nMaking Peace with Creation will premiere at Regent College on Wednesday\, December 7th at 7:00 pm.

SUMMARY:Trash Clean-Up! (King Township\, ON)
DESCRIPTION:Want to care for your local ecosystem?\nLive in the Greater Toronto Area?\nJoin us at the Oak Ridges Moraine Land Trust’s StarCliff Nature Reserve helping the Land Trust care for this ecologically unique and significant property. The earth will thank you. And so will your body\, mind and spirit! \nJoin the Facebook Event\nFor this final Nature Reserve Stewardship meeting of the year\, we’ll be clearing out the trash. There’s not a lot\, and almost no small items. But there are a few large ones that will take a number of helping hands! Don’t worry\, we won’t be hauling out the old water pump pictured above. That artifact will remain where it is. At least for now. Though\, there are a few oil drums (used for floats on an old swimming raft) and a few other similarly-sized items that need to be removed. We’ll use a manual winch to assist us. \nSince StarCliff is a Monarch Waystation\,** in place of the oil drums\, we’ll scatter some seeds of native herbacious plants that monarch caterpillars and butterflies require. \nFor all the details and to RSVP\, go to http://www.oakridgesmoraine.org/volunteer.html. \n*As StarCliff is a nature reserve and there is a private residence at the opening to the property\, the street address is not publicized. \n**See http://monarchwatch.org/waystations/

SUMMARY:Shrub & Tree Transplanting (King Township\, ON)
DESCRIPTION:Want to care for your local ecosystem?\nLive in the Greater Toronto Area?\nJoin us at the Oak Ridges Moraine Land Trust’s StarCliff Nature Reserve helping the Land Trust care for this ecologically unique and significant property. The earth will thank you. And so will your body\, mind and spirit! \nJoin the Facebook Event\nThere might not be ice or snow\, as the above photo suggests\, and it may actually be seasonally warm. But we don’t want anyone to be mislead. And we certainly want everyone to be dressed appropriately. \nThrough hands-on stewardship we’ll be continuing the control of Common Buckthorn and Tartarian Honeysuckle by transplanting native shrubs and trees growing on the trails into locations where those two invasive shrubs are being removed. Even if the there’s a thin layer of ice on the kettle lake\, and even a thin layer of snow\, the ground will still be moist and great for digging in! 🙂 \nOnce established\, Common Buckthorn and Tartarian Honeysuckle dominate and substantially reduce biodiversity. Our replacing the invasive plants with native ones is significant to reversing the spread and negative impact of the invasive ones and for increasing biodiversity. \nFor all the details and to RSVP\, go to http://www.oakridgesmoraine.org/volunteer.html. \n*As StarCliff is a nature reserve and there is a private residence at the opening to the property\, the street address is not publicized.

SUMMARY:Fall Colours Hike\, Supper and Learn Together (Ottawa\, ON)
DESCRIPTION:Join an A Rocha gathering in Ottawa\nPlease RSVP to Paul Heintzman for location details. \n2:00pm – Fall Colours Walk\nJoin us at the home of Paul and Monique Heintzman in Gatineau Park for a walk along the King Mountain Trail. Features of this trail include panoramic views of the fall colours in Gatineau Park\, the City of Ottawa and the Ottawa Valley. For those who are hardy\, there is a possibility of a swim in Kingsmere Lake after the hike. \n5:30pm – Potluck Supper\nPlease RSVP and let us know what you plan to bring so that we can plan accordingly. \n7:00pm – Presentation “The Company We Keep: Do you know your native land?“\nCombining experiences of a childhood in the Ottawa Valley with the insights of 19th century immigrants Moodie & Trail\, and 20th century conservationist Bill Mason\, this illustrated talk is both an invitation – and challenge – to be attentively responsible to the particular environmental community in which one dwells. Lessons learned from Tolkien and C.S. Lewis\, M. Avison and W. Berry call us back to this geographic region of Ontario & Québec. \nDr. Kirstin Jeffrey Johnson (alum of Regent College and Institute of Theology\, Imagination\, & the Arts at University of St Andrews) publishes and lectures internationally on subjects such as the Inklings\, 19th c literature & history\, and engagement with the environment; the common link between her literary and theological mentors is a holistic and integrative responsibility towards\, and love of\, creation.
