DESCRIPTION:There is an mind-boggling amount of life in the soil beneath our feet\, which is misunderstood by many. However\, the underground world of fungi is fascinating and mysterious. Therefore\, this Nature Talk’s topic is the diversity of fungal life in Manitoba and how it connects to above ground life. \nDr. Diana Bizecki Robson\, the presenter of the talk\, is the Curator of Botany at the Manitoba Museum. One of Dr. Robson’s key areas of study is the prairies\, which includes a lot of mycological activity. Also\, she has found that mushrooms have become a point of delicious interest to her in her studies. You can read her botany blog here. \nThe Underground World of Fungi promises to be an exciting talk. We hope it will equip people to see this often over-looked part of nature. DESCRIPTION:Fermented foods have helped many people with their health\, energy levels\, and digestion. These foods are a great way to prolong the life of your garden produce and add flavour to meals. Also\, fermentation is a way to further enjoy creation. Therefore\, we are inviting Natalie Dyck from Edible Alchemy to lead this workshop on vegetable fermentation. \nBeyond Basic Sauerkrauts is a two-hour workshop. Attendees can expect to learn about the science and unique flavours of fermented vegetables. Additionally\, there will be a DIY vegetable kraut station and samples to tantalize the taste buds. Participants will leave this skill share with knowledge\, hands-on experience\, and hand-outs to accompany their new\, bubbly creation. \nBring a curious appetite\, an open mind\, a glass jar with a good fitting lid and some vegetables that you enjoy eating (such as cabbage\, kale\, beets\, apples\, onions\, peppers\, radishes and herbs). DESCRIPTION:The ‘Back to Eden’ film tells the story of Paul Gautschi as he learns techniques for organic gardening. Through this process\, he finds that these lessons help deepen his faith and understand God more clearly. \nPaul moved from California to Washington where he hoped to build a garden to feed his family. However\, he quickly discovered that regardless of his effort he couldn’t grow food there due to a lack of water. This caused Paul to realize the forest continued to thrive when his garden did not. This led him on a journey with God of discovering a new method of gardening that requires less work and inputs while growing healthier produce and soil. \nThe film offers an inspiring take on how gardening can grow both vegetables and faith. DESCRIPTION:Want to care for your local ecosystem?\nLive in the Greater Toronto Area?\nJoin us at the Oak Ridges Moraine Land Trust’s StarCliff Nature Reserve helping the Land Trust care for this ecologically unique and significant property. The earth will thank you. And so will your body\, mind and spirit! \nJoin the Facebook Event\nThere might not be ice or snow\, as the above photo suggests\, and it may actually be seasonally warm. But we don’t want anyone to be mislead. And we certainly want everyone to be dressed appropriately. \nThrough hands-on stewardship we’ll be continuing the control of Common Buckthorn and Tartarian Honeysuckle by transplanting native shrubs and trees growing on the trails into locations where those two invasive shrubs are being removed. Even if the there’s a thin layer of ice on the kettle lake\, and even a thin layer of snow\, the ground will still be moist and great for digging in! 🙂 \nOnce established\, Common Buckthorn and Tartarian Honeysuckle dominate and substantially reduce biodiversity.
