SUMMARY:Pembina Valley Bioblitz (PVIC\, MB)
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we learn about and celebrate biodiversity in the Pembina Valley. \nThe Pembina Valley is a biodiversity hotspot in Southern Manitoba. The valley is home to a surprising amount of birds\, mammals\, insects\, amphibians\, reptiles\, plants\, and fungi. We want to take time to appreciate and celebrate this biodiversity. \nOn June 3rd from 10:00am until 3:00pm we will host a public celebration of the valley’s biodiversity. This will be an opportunity to learn about the plants and animals that make their home in the Pembina Valley. You’ll be able to participate in themed guided hikes and activity stations. Partners from other interpretive centres\, such as Oak Hammock Marsh will help us facilitate these stations. It is our hope that this event will help you become better acquainted with this valuable local landmark\, the Pembina Valley. \nA short closing ceremony will take place at 3:00pm with the preliminary counts and messages from local leaders about the importance of biodiversity and public green spaces. \nThe first 75 people to arrive will receive a free Pembina Valley Bioblitz t-shirt. \nOutside of this public celebration\, the Pembina Valley Bioblitz is a 24-hour effort to identify as many plant and animal species as possible at the A Rocha Pembina Valley Interpretive Centre. We have invited naturalists and biologists specializing in various fields to do the counting. However\, if you would like to contribute to the count\, please contact us for information. \nThe Pembina Valley Bioblitz is an A Rocha Pembina Valley Interpretive Centre event. It is made possible through the support of TD Friends of the Environment Fund\, the Pembina Valley Conservation District\, and the Winkler Morden Co-op. \nStay up to date with this event on our facebook page.

DESCRIPTION:Christians rightly put a lot of intention into thinking through our relationship with God. However\, we spend significantly less time thinking about God’s relationship with the non-human parts of creation. So come and join us as we think about questions on how God and creation relate to each other. \nJamie Fox\, the Director of the A Rocha Pembina Valley Interpretive Centre\, will be giving this talk and helping us to think through this topic. \nDate: April 20th\, 2017 \nTime: 7:30pm – 9:30pm \nPlace: Grace Mennonite Church\, 1350 Pembina Ave.\, Winkler \n

In an era that has seen growing concern about climate change and the impact of industry and technology\, Professor Wilkinson has insisted that this is a critical sphere for Christian thought and action. From their home on Galiano Island off the coast of British Columbia\, he and his wife\, Mary-Ruth Wilkinson\, have encouraged generations of students to think long and hard about the meaning of creation and of our responsibility as creatures within it. \n\nWhat can be done to address the enormous issues facing our fragile and threatened planet?\nIs it possible to live confidently and creatively in the face of massive problems such as pollution and the acidification of the oceans?\nWhat hope is there of making peace with creation?\n\nIn this hour-long film\, made with the assistance of a team of students from Regent College\, Loren Wilkinson goes in search of answers to these pressing questions. Through personal reflections (set both in the beautiful Gulf Islands where he lives and in the urban context of Vancouver\, where he continues to teach)\, stimulating conversations with leading thinkers\, artists and activists\, and specially created art work\, together with extracts from his poetry\, Loren Wilkinson presents his own compelling and beautiful vision for human life in the 21st century. \nIf you are unable to join us for the afternoon activities\, feel free to join us for the potluck supper and/or film.\nFor more details please email Paul Heintzman.\nUpcoming Event in Ottawa\n\nSaturday May 20\, 2017: Wildflower Walk\, Potluck Supper and an evening with Markku and Leah Kostamo (co-founders of A Rocha Canada).\nLeah Kostamo will also be participating in a dialogue with Margaret Atwood on the topic of The Future of Religion in Canada on the evening of Friday May 19 at the University of Ottawa.

SUMMARY:Nature Talk: The Underground World of Fungi (Morden\, MB)
DESCRIPTION:There is an mind-boggling amount of life in the soil beneath our feet\, which is misunderstood by many. However\, the underground world of fungi is fascinating and mysterious. Therefore\, this Nature Talk’s topic is the diversity of fungal life in Manitoba and how it connects to above ground life. \nDr. Diana Bizecki Robson\, the presenter of the talk\, is the Curator of Botany at the Manitoba Museum. One of Dr. Robson’s key areas of study is the prairies\, which includes a lot of mycological activity. Also\, she has found that mushrooms have become a point of delicious interest to her in her studies. You can read her botany blog here. \nThe Underground World of Fungi promises to be an exciting talk. We hope it will equip people to see this often over-looked part of nature. Also\, it will teach participants how to collect and specimens. \nWhen: March 9th\, 2017\, 7:30pm-9:30pm \nWhere: Morden Adult Education Centre\, 200-30 Stephen Street
