SUMMARY:Temperature Monitoring Workshop (Houston\, BC)
DESCRIPTION:Temperature is one of the key indicators of the ability of a river to contain spawning salmon. All species of salmon and steelhead need cold water (below 15 C) to survive and thrive. As air temperatures warm\, river bank clearing removes shade and erosion creates a shallower river\, high water temperatures are a major concern in the Upper Bulkley River watershed. \nBob Westcott of Westcott Environmental will be training A Rocha’s UBR Streamkeepers to participate in this year’s temperature monitoring program in partnership with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans\, Ministry of Environment\, Office of the Wet’suwet’en\, A Rocha Canada and other non-profit organizations in our watershed. \nIf you would like to help out this year don’t miss this opportunity to learn and be trained. \nCost: Free

SUMMARY:Pembina Valley Bioblitz (PVIC\, MB)
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we learn about and celebrate biodiversity in the Pembina Valley. \nThe Pembina Valley is a biodiversity hotspot in Southern Manitoba. The valley is home to a surprising amount of birds\, mammals\, insects\, amphibians\, reptiles\, plants\, and fungi. We want to take time to appreciate and celebrate this biodiversity. \nOn June 3rd from 10:00am until 3:00pm we will host a public celebration of the valley’s biodiversity. This will be an opportunity to learn about the plants and animals that make their home in the Pembina Valley. You’ll be able to participate in themed guided hikes and activity stations. Partners from other interpretive centres\, such as Oak Hammock Marsh will help us facilitate these stations. It is our hope that this event will help you become better acquainted with this valuable local landmark\, the Pembina Valley. \nA short closing ceremony will take place at 3:00pm with the preliminary counts and messages from local leaders about the importance of biodiversity and public green spaces. \nThe first 75 people to arrive will receive a free Pembina Valley Bioblitz t-shirt. \nOutside of this public celebration\, the Pembina Valley Bioblitz is a 24-hour effort to identify as many plant and animal species as possible at the A Rocha Pembina Valley Interpretive Centre. We have invited naturalists and biologists specializing in various fields to do the counting. However\, if you would like to contribute to the count\, please contact us for information. \nThe Pembina Valley Bioblitz is an A Rocha Pembina Valley Interpretive Centre event. It is made possible through the support of TD Friends of the Environment Fund\, the Pembina Valley Conservation District\, and the Winkler Morden Co-op. \nStay up to date with this event on our facebook page.
