SUMMARY:Talking About Ticks (Morden\, MB)
DESCRIPTION:Ticks are increasingly a concern for people who visit and enjoy the Pembina Valley. Although they pose a risk for people who spend time outside\, a little knowledge goes a long way in keeping us safe. \nDr. Kateryn Rochon\, Assistant Professor of Veterinary Entomology at U of M whose research has a specific focus on ticks\, will be presenting on local ticks. Specifically\, Dr. Rochon will teach about how ticks fit into ecosystems\, the differences between Black-legged Ticks and American Dog Ticks\, risks that come from ticks\, and how to be safe while outdoors. \nIt is our hope that this talk can help you be able to go into natural spaces more confidently. After attending this talk\, you will better understand ticks and how to be safe around them. \nApril 11th\n 7:30pm-9:00pm\n Morden Library\n 514 Stephen Street\n (The front of the library will be closed\, so please use the back door)

SUMMARY:Grasslands People (Morden\, MB)

SUMMARY:Of Things Unseen (Winkler\, MB)
DESCRIPTION:Our world is full of mystery and the more we learn about it\, the more questions we seem to have. Looking out into the expanses of space\, we know there is much we cannot and may never see. Even looking at the finer details of our world\, such as the hidden connections within our ecosystems\, reveals how much we have yet to see. \nElmer Joy\, a part of the A Rocha team in Manitoba and a former professor of the Old Testament\, will be our guide to this rarely noticed and unseeable world. In learning about these things unseen we will experience awe and wonder\, much like a person might experience looking at a beautiful vista. We will also develop a deeper appreciation for creation and creator. \nHe will cover a diversity of subjects\, but will give special attention to trees\, including the unseen community they share. \nJanuary 23rd\, 2018\n 7:30pm-9:30pm\nCovenant Mennonite Church \n363 8th Street\, Winkler\n \n

SUMMARY:Trees and Their Care (Winkler\, MB)
DESCRIPTION:People have a special and unique relationship with trees. We love to visit them as they grow naturally in forests. However\, even in cities there are always trees nearby. We grow them in our yards for shade\, in our towns for beauty\, around our fields for protection from the wind. They produce oxygen for us and we use them to build our homes. Even just the sight of a tree can give us a sense of peace\, inspiration\, or nostalgia. \nGiven how much we rely on trees\, it is surprising how little we can know about them. For example\, what is the difference between a pine and a spruce? What causes the leaves of trees to change colour? How can we distinguish between trees in the winter? \nTo learn the answers to some of these questions join us as David Wallace\, a professional arborist in Winkler\, teaches us about trees. He will help us understand and recognize the characteristics of different trees\, including their branch structure\, leaf types\, and how they grow. Also\, we’ll learn about the roles they play in our ecosystems and communities. Finally\, we’ll learn how we can best care for our trees. \nBe prepared to go outside for a portion of this presentation\, as Wallace will be demonstrating pruning techniques outdoors. \nDecember 16th\n1:30pm – 3:30pm\nWinkler Library\, 160 Main Street

SUMMARY:Christmas Shopping at Brooksdale (Surrey\, BC)
DESCRIPTION:If you’re looking for locally-sourced gifts\, come browse our items and support the A Rocha centre & local artisans alike through your purchases this season. \nShopping locally and buying fair trade reduces our impact on creation and supports local economies. Therefore\, everything we sell is either locally produced\, fairly traded or promotes an environmental ethic. So whether you go home with jam made from local berries\, an organic cotton t-shirt\, or hand-crafted pottery – know that you have cared for people and places by your purchase. \nCan’t make it on November 30? We are open for Christmas shopping on December 1 too!
