SUMMARY:Discovery Nature Sanctuary Bioblitz & Grand Opening
DESCRIPTION:The community of Winkler is making more space for nature and now it is time to celebrate! \nThe Discovery Nature Sanctuary (DNS) was first established last summer and now we are ready to celebrate! You can join us on June 9th for the DNS’ Grand Opening! \nYou will get to enjoy nature inside Winkler’s city limits and learn about the ways the DNS is enhancing the space. The event starts with an opening ceremony. After that\, there will be a chance to explore different stations at the DNS and lunch will be available for purchase. \nGrand Opening\nJune 9th\, 10:30am-1:00pm\nThe DNS is on the SW corner of Highway 14 and Eastview Drive\nPlease bring a water bottle and a folding chair \nIn addition to celebrating the Nature Sanctuary\, we will also be holding a Bioblitz. This is a 24-hour effort to find and identify as many plant and animal species as possible. This gives us a good idea of the starting condition of the DNS. It also opens our eyes to the diversity at the DNS! Please contact us if you would like to participate in the Bioblitz. \nAlong with the City of Winkler\, the Winkler Horticultural Society\, GVSD\, and many passionate individuals\, we have been an excited partner in starting up the Discovery Nature Sanctuary. It is a natural space close to home to enjoy birds\, bugs\, and plants! It also supports struggling\, beneficial wildlife.

SUMMARY:Avian Impressions from St. Vital Park (Birding)
DESCRIPTION:There’s more to birds than meets the eye; bird “watching” is only a half baked pie! Marvel at not only the sights and sounds of migratory birds\, but also reflect on the lands and calendars of their sojourning (from Argentina to Texas to Shamattawa and everything in between). Mark Huebert will guide us through a place that is close to his heart – St. Vital Park – where he has spent probably hundreds of hours since his childhood being impressed by the intricacy and grandeur of God’s creation.  Let us experientially contemplate together that “The earth is the Lord’s and everything in it; the world\, and all who live in it” (Psalm 24.1) \nLOCATION: St. Vital Park (we will gather just inside the park gate) \nBRING: Dress for the weather (it’s chilly in the mornings)\, footwear that can get dirty\, binoculars (if you have or can borrow some)\, bird book (optional) \nPREP (optional): “Merlin Bird ID” app – it’s free. Add “Canada East” pack (also free).  http://merlin.allaboutbirds.org/ \nMark Huebert flew to Malaysia to win the hand of his lovebird (and wife) Neena.  They have two nestlings\, ages 6 and 8. Mark grew up in St. Vital and while earning his way through university spent about 5 months (over 5 different years) doing bird monitoring work in the boreal forests of southern Manitoba. During this time he also developed an appreciation for wildflowers\, insects and other creatures that share the land with us. Mark currently is a teacher at The King’s School.

SUMMARY:Café A Rocha (Winnipeg\, MB)
DESCRIPTION:Food and conversation with Kenton Lobe. Join us as we hear from Kenton about the journey of “Germinating Conversations” and what is happening now with “Harvesting Conversations.” \nLocation: Zoe Matties’ (199 Ethelbert) \nRSVP: Scott Gerbrandt at scott.gerbrandt@arocha.ca \nPlease bring a toonie to help with the cost of the meal. \nA Rocha\, Mennonite Central Committee and Canadian Mennonite University have spent five years creating space in rural and urban Manitoba for dialogue surrounding food\, faith\, and land. We have explicitly sought out difference among growers and eaters\, endeavouring to learn together what it means to be a people of faith in conversation with the land. These “Germinating Conversations” have yielded rich and ongoing participation amongst farmers and consumers – moving carefully across rural and urban edges. In addition to annual dialogue events\, participants are currently working to bring some of these conversations into a book project.

SUMMARY:Grasslands People (Morden\, MB)
DESCRIPTION:When did you last spend time in a grassland? They are beautiful and fascinating places full of different grasses\, birds\, flowers\, and bugs. SUMMARY:Of Things Unseen (Winkler\, MB)
DESCRIPTION:Our world is full of mystery and the more we learn about it\, the more questions we seem to have. Looking out into the expanses of space\, we know there is much we cannot and may never see. Even looking at the finer details of our world\, such as the hidden connections within our ecosystems\, reveals how much we have yet to see. \nElmer Joy\, a part of the A Rocha team in Manitoba and a former professor of the Old Testament\, will be our guide to this rarely noticed and unseeable world. In learning about these things unseen we will experience awe and wonder\, much like a person might experience looking at a beautiful vista. We will also develop a deeper appreciation for creation and creator. \nHe will cover a diversity of subjects\, but will give special attention to trees\, including the unseen community they share. \nJanuary 23rd\, 2018\n 7:30pm-9:30pm\nCovenant Mennonite Church \n363 8th Street\, Winkler\n \n
