SUMMARY:A Rocha Talks: The Story of Plastic (Online)
DESCRIPTION:The Story of Plastic takes a deeper look at the crisis of plastic pollution and the global effects it has on the health of our planet.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\nA Rocha Canada invites you to join the inaugural event of our A Rocha Talks series. This panel discussion will focus on The Story of Plastic\, a powerful new documentary by The Story of Stuff Project. The film takes a sweeping look at the human-made crisis of plastic pollution and the worldwide effect on the health of people and our planet. With engaging original animation\, archival industry footage beginning in the 1930s\, and first-person accounts of the unfolding emergency\, the film distills a complex problem that is increasingly affecting the well-being of the planet and its residents. \nStriking footage shot over three continents illustrates the ongoing catastrophe: fields full of garbage\, veritable mountains of trash; rivers and seas clogged with waste; and skies choked with the poisonous runoff from plastic production and recycling processes with no end in sight. \nHere are a few direct quotes from the film that highlight the issues: \n\n“Our current plastic waste crisis is NOT about waste management…”\n“On a personal level\, I have stopped using plastic bags and plastic straws and that is a great thing\, but you realize that on a systematic level\, it doesn’t change anything…”\n“Of all the plastic that has ever existed\, more than half was produced in the last 15 years\, and 91% of it has never been recycled.”\n“People think plastic can be recycled\, but actually most plastic is very hard to recycle.”\n\nAs a nature conservation organization with a Christian conviction\, a panel of team members will explore how to engage this critical and sobering topic as Christ’s followers\, with thoughtful action\, and with hope. \nOur panelists include: \nMatthew Humphrey – Director of Theological Education\, A Rocha Canada \nZoe Matties – Manitoba Program Manager\, A Rocha Canada \nRick Faw (host) – VP of Programming\, A Rocha Canada \nRegistrants will receive complimentary access to the film in order to view it prior to our panel discussion. \nThis event is free and open to the public. \nWatch the trailer \n \nOnline Viewing and Panel Discussion \nRegistered attendees will receive a link from A Rocha Canada the morning of Friday\, June 26 that will enable them to stream the film prior to the panel discussion. The link will be delivered to you at the email address you use to RSVP here. \n\nPlease watch the film at your own leisure anytime with the streaming link. You can watch online on your desktop\, laptop\, or mobile devices. The film is about 90 minutes in length.\nThen join us for the panel discussion and Q&A via Zoom on Tuesday\, June 30th at 7 pm PDT. You will receive a separate link for the Zoom event alongside the streaming link.\n\n \nPowered by Eventbrite

SUMMARY:Silence in the Seasons Mini Retreat (Manitoba)
DESCRIPTION:A “mini” Silence in the Seasons in the City:\nDue to the current pandemic and phase 2 protocols outlined by the provincial government we are not able to offer our Silence in the Seasons Retreat. However I would like to invite you to consider joining me in a mini Silence in the Seasons at the Carol Shield’s Labyrinth in Kings Park. \nDate/Time: June 13\, 2020 9am-10am \nWhere: Carol Shields Labyrinth at Kings Park \n Contact us here to RSVP ×RSVP\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n \n \n RSVP Here\n\n \n Sorry\, this form is not available. \n \n \n \n \n[/modal]\nClose\n  \nKristi Degenhardt\, a friend of A Rocha\, writes brief description of a labyrinth: \nAs a spiritual tool\, a labyrinth represents a guided prayer walk. In contrast to a maze that has dead ends and choices to make along the way\, a labyrinth is a single path to the centre. \nInstead of a pilgrimage to Jerusalem\, or the Camino de Santiago\, medieval churches started to create labyrinths that parishioners could use closer to home. Whether inlaid in stone in the sanctuary or courtyard\, or crafted into a garden\, faithful seekers could easily access it. \nStart your labyrinth walk by setting an intention. Perhaps it’s a very specific question for God/Spirit/Creator\, perhaps it’s a music lyric that has been stuck in your head\, maybe a line of Scripture that inspires or troubles you. It might be a deep breath alongside “what do you want me to hear/see/ponder today.” It could be a decision you’re wrestling with\, or a person you are having a hard time forgiving. \nAnd then deliberately walk towards the centre. If you’re walking with others\, there will be some shuffling as you pass one another. Take note of what your senses are telling you. Maybe you repeat your intention as a mantra to stay focused\, maybe you free your mind to safely wander the path that your intention has set. \nOnce you come to the centre\, do what feels right. Close your eyes\, whisper a prayer\, leave a rock or flower\, pause a moment. Maybe you add a layer to your intention\, a follow up question\, or a repeat of the initial question. \nAnd then walk back out\, taking note of when you make the final step. \nIf the labyrinth is grass or sand\, consider walking it barefoot. If it’s in a public place\, determine whether it seems safe to leave your jacket/bag/extras on the ground and walk unencumbered. Allow yourself time to jot down some thoughts or images in a journal. \nAnd then continue about your day. \nhttp://www.carolshieldslabyrinth.ca/ \nPlease RSVP here ×RSVP\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n \n \n RSVP Here\n\n \n Sorry\, this form is not available. \n \n \n \n \n[/modal]\nClose\nPlease use the Manitoba Self Screening tool before coming to this event. SUMMARY:Cooking With Stewing Hens (Surrey\, BC)
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the lost thrifty art of cooking stewing hens. Two generations ago\, most individuals living on farms ate their laying hens when they stopped laying. Normal meat birds are slaughtered at 14 weeks of age. They are young and tender. However\, laying hens live for 1-3 years\, meaning special care is needed to soften their meat and make it more palatable. In a world of increasing interest in food security\, stewing hens are a great source of protein\, and are a much cheaper option for chicken meat than regular meat birds. \nIn this workshop you will learn \n\nAbout the history of stewing hens\,\nHow to break down a bird into its parts (a transferable skill for meat birds too)\,\nHow to use all the parts of the bird\,\nAnd several methods for cooking stewing hens.\n\nYou will also have the opportunity to sample stewing hen meat prepared in several ways\, learning on your tongue how different cooking methods affect the bird on your palate. \nIncluded in the cost of the workshop is one stewing hen that participants will take home. \nAbout the Instructor\nJenn Cline is an amalgamate farmer-chef\, the perfect individual to guide you \n \nthrough a farm to fork cookery lesson on stewing hens. As a Farmer with six years of experience\, she knows that not all chickens are created equal\, and that caring about the chicken you eat means caring about the plants\, soil and watershed that grow your chicken. As a trained Chef with eight years of professional cooking experience\, she knows a thing or two about transforming quality raw ingredients into a feast for our senses and nourishment for our minds and bodies. She has not cooked just a chicken or two\, but hundreds\, spending hours honing her butchery and cooking skills. Jenn loves being an intermediary between the fields and people’s palates\, and hopes to inspire all her class participants to become more mindful eaters. \n \nPowered by Eventbrite

SUMMARY:Christians\, Climate Science\, and Our Culture: Can we Agree?
DESCRIPTION:Christians\, Climate Science\, and Our Culture: Can we Agree? \n5:30 pm: Pizza Supper – the Canadian Scientific and Christian Affiliation (CSCA) will provide free pizza and drinks. We are asking A Rocha friends to bring along a ready-to-serve small salad or small dessert if you are able to. \nPlease e-mail Kris Nanda at kkhnanda@hotmail.com to confirm your attendance so we know how much pizza to order. \n7:00 pm: Video presentation by Katherine Hayhoe \nMounting scientific evidence clearly documents the risks posed by climate change to the poor\, the needy\, and other vulnerable populations\, the very people Christians are called to love. As the scientific evidence builds\, however\, so does the vocal opposition to this evidence: in Canada\, the U.S.\, Australia and the U.K. Much of the disagreement comes from political and religious conservatives. Why is climate change so polarizing to these communities? What makes it so hard to comprehend and accept? Combining basic tenets of the Christian faith with recent findings from the areas of psychology\, sociology\, and climate science\, Hayhoe will discuss potential reasons for these disagreements and the role that shared values may play in moving us forward past these barriers. \nKatherine Hayhoe is a professor and Director of the Climate Science Centre at Texas Tech University. Time Magazine named her one of the 100 most influential people in 2014. She was recently named a Champion of the Earth by the United Nations and is the Climate Ambassador for the World Evangelical Alliance. Katherine was interviewed on CBC Radio’s The House last Saturday. Listen to the CBC interview at: https://www.cbc.ca/radio/thehouse/connecting-with-people-the-quest-for-common-ground-on-climate-change-1.5401156 \nLocal Panel: Following the video\, three local people will give brief responses: \nAnthony Siegrist\, pastor of Ottawa Mennonite Church\, holds a PhD in Theology and is currently enrolled in the Master of Science in Environmental Sustainability program at the University of Ottawa. \nJohn Cook\, has a PhD in physics\, and worked as a research officer at the National Research Council in solid state physics. \nKarri Munn-Venn\, is the Senior Policy Analyst with Citizens for Public Justice. \nDiscussion and Questions: There will be time for discussion and questions following the brief responses by the panel members. \nSponsorship: In addition to A Rocha and the CSCA\, this event is also sponsored by Ottawa Christian Reformed Campus Chaplaincy\, the Graduate and Faculty Christian Fellowship at the University of Ottawa\, and the Laurentian Leadership Centre.
