SUMMARY:Advent as Spiritual Resistance: Christmas\, COVID\, and Consumerism
DESCRIPTION:Exploring how we might engage Advent and Christmas in ways that care for Creation and resist consumerism in a time of COVID! \nZoom link will be sent to registrants. \nAbout this Event\nWhile this can often be a stressful season filled with large expectations – both social and economic (did you get the office party in our calendar? Do we have an even number of gifts for our siblings or children?!)\, this year we bear a whole different set of stress markers within us as we prepare for Christmas. \nUsually we speak of Advent as a time of waiting – but this year\, we are all a bit tired of waiting! \nSo how do we engage the season of Advent and Christmas this year? How might thinking of this as a time of resistance re-energize us in our care for Creation – and our facing the challenges of this year due to COVID-19? \nJoin our panel as we explore this season of Advent as a preparation for and anticipation of Emmanuel\, God-with-us. \nElisa Leahy\, film-maker  \nElisa Stone Leahy is a Peruvian-American independent filmmaker who was raised in Peru. She studied film in Vancouver\, B.C. where she co-founded Noonday Films. Her company has produced award-winning documentaries about guerrilla gardening in Vancouver\, B.C.\, children with HIV/AIDS in Honduras (Crystal Heart Award\, Heartland Film Festival)\, and elderly activists in the United States (DER Award\, Hot Docs Festival).\n \nMeagan Crosby-Shearer \nMeagan has a passion for creative liturgy\, social justice and engaging ways of entering into our faith story that make them come alive. She loves the wild beauty of the West Coast and learning from her twins Amaya and Zion. She is trained as a Registered Nurse and an ordained priest in the Anglican Church of Canada\, where she shares in leadership at the Abbeychurch and St. Matthias in Victoria\, BC. \nPaul Neufeld\, farmer \nPaul has been growing vegetables as the lead farmer at A Rocha in Surrey for the past 16 years.  He loves the physical work of farming\, the beauty of vegetables\, the limitless possibilities of soil and watching folks get excited about the flavours and challenges of local seasonal eating.  Paul lives (and farms\, along with his wife Angela) at Kingfisher farm\, a 10-acre property which is co-owned by a community of 6 families.

SUMMARY:A Rocha Talks: Earthkeeping in the City - From backyard composting to electric vehicles
DESCRIPTION:Join us to explore the myriad ways that creation care can happen right where you are in the city. \nAbout this event\nA Rocha Canada invites you to join our ongoing series of A Rocha Talks. \nIn North American culture we tend to consider nature as opposite to civilization. We’ve often said nature is where humans are not. But in Genesis humans are created as an intrinsic part of creation. Throughout Scripture all the residents of our earth home\, plants\, animals\, and humans\, share a common\, intertwined past and future. Today\, we see creation flourishing and languishing alongside humans in forests\, alpine meadows\, parks\, suburbs and cities. \nGiven that over 70% of Canada’s population and 55% of the global population lives in cities\, city life has an enormous impact on the earth. How do we learn to live with creation in the ways we eat\, travel\, work and play in our urban homes? How does our faith and the care of the earth come together in an urban setting? \nThis panel will explore how we can engage caring for creation in the city. We will hear how each panellist is navigating this challenge in their own lives. We hope you’ll join us in the conversation! \nOur panelists: \nTeresa Prokopanko (yes\, it’s phonetic) loves dirt and hopes you will too! She is a Compost Program Coordinator at Green Action Centre in her day job\, and is a mom – well\, all the time. Teresa lives in Winnipeg with her husband and toddler daughter. They enjoy discussing city planning\, loafing at the lake\, volunteering at church\, and going on local people-powered adventures together. \nPaul Loewen rides an electric unicycle (google it) to work\, including many days during Winnipeg’s winter last year. He’s well aware that it’ll be hard to convince everyone else to do the same\, and so electric vehicles fall into the overlap between two of his passions: technology and reducing carbon emissions. He lives in Winnipeg with his wife\, Jeanette\, and their three boys. They plan to own an EV within 3-5 years–if people still own their own vehicles by then. \nAndrea Ramos Santos rides her bike as much as she can around Vancouver\, but she is still adapting to the winter in Canada (it’s hard for a Brazilian!). She is passionate about nature\, birds\, and trees\, which lead her to study ecology. She worked for A Rocha in Brazil before moving to Canada with her husband Gustavo. Both studied at Regent College\, and now they are learning how to live as typical Pacific Northwest dwellers. \nThe panel discussion will be hosted by Zoe Matties\, Manitoba Program Manager. \nThis event is free and open to the public.\n \nPowered by Eventbrite

SUMMARY:A Rocha Talks: Alone in a World of Wounds - Living with Ecological Grief
DESCRIPTION:Join us to explore the lived experience of ecological grief and foster conversation on how we might engage this grief.\nAbout this Event\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA Rocha Canada invites you to join our ongoing series of A Rocha Talks. \nFor those of us who observe the planet closely\, too often the news is discouraging. At A Rocha rather than focusing on the frightening trendlines we seek to demonstrate practical ways we can better attend to the positive transformation of people and places. However\, at some point we need to be honest about the ways we are facing the deep troubles of our planet and the effect this has on us. In a 2014 Guardian article\, Jo Confino asked\, “Why aren’t we on the floor doubled up in pain at our capacity for industrial scale genocide of the world’s species?” The truth is that some of us are – and it is having a toll on our mental and emotional well-being. Increasingly\, young people report feelings of helplessness\, anger\, grief\, and disconnection as they face the uncertain future of a planet in trouble. \nThis panel explores the lived experience of ecological grief and seeks to foster conversation on how we might engage in this grief in ways that promote sustainability and well-being as humans who care for Creation. We bring together the collective wisdom of scholar\, activist\, academic\, minister\, counselor\, and spiritual director to begin this rich conversation. Hope you will join us! \n\n\nOur Panelists: \nAnupama Ranawana is a theologian and writer based in Oxford. Her work focuses on decolonial theology\, feminist religious thought\, faith and international development and ecological justice. \nBrent Unrau is a Registered Clinical Counselor and Spiritual director\, he lives in intentional community on Kingfisher Farm in Surrey\, B.C. Canada. \nHannah Malcolm is training to be a priest in the Church of England and writing a PhD on climate and ecological grief. In her spare time\, she writes and organizes around the theology of climate justice. \nThe Panel Discussion will be hosted by Matthew Humphrey\, Director of Theological Education at A Rocha Canada. \nThis event is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:A Rocha Talks: Godspeed and the Art of Neighbouring
DESCRIPTION:Sign up to screen the film “Godspeed” and join our panel of local visionaries who are living Godspeed and model the art of Neighbouring.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\nWe welcome participants to screen the film Godspeed and come prepared for a rich panel discussion of what it means to live \nA Rocha Canada invites you to join our ongoing series of A Rocha Talks. This panel discussion will focus on Godspeed\, which tells the story of a pastor who\, in moving to a small Scottish parish\, rediscovers his vocation by walking through small villages\, knocking on peoples doors\, and getting to know them. There he discovers true freedom in slowing down from the busyness of life and learns the importance of a stability that enables deep relationships with people and place. The film raises important questions on what it means to be human and how to life faithfully in this time and place. Rev. Matt Canlis interviews the likes of Eugene Peterson\, N.T. Wright \, and others. \nOur panel includes: \nBarry and Joan Jung have spent the last 10 years practicing the art of neighbouring in Vancouver. They desire to to know and be known by their neighbours. They are exploring how they can be more engaged in their neighbourhood and city as community conveners and social connectors and are also trying to figure out what it means to be followers of Jesus in their neighbourhood. Before the pandemic\, Barry and Joan hosted homestays for college students and work visa candidates from around the world. They are now determining on how to remain connected with their neighbours during this pandemic. Barry has managed the household for the homestays and Joan teaches grade 4 students in Vancouver. \n( https://neighbourhoodsmallgrants.ca/blog/the-art-of-neighbouring/) \nKaren Reed. Working in the non-profit sector for most of her life\, Karen is currently an urban worker\, connecting neighbours and contributing to the good in East Vancouver. The focus is on shaping a community of welcome in a 6 bedroom home in the heart of the neighborhood. The shared life of the community embraces values of simplicity\, downward mobility\, sustainability and radical hospitality. \nKaren is on a taskforce that has developed a Christian Food Network\, has led community kitchens\, is learning to grow her own food and seeking to involve neighbors in doing the same\, with a focus on “grow-a-row-share-a-row”. She also serves on the Executive Board of World Vision. \n(https://arocha.ca/karen-reed/) \nLiz Sparks (the Tacoma Catholic Worker) Elizabeth and her husband Paul live in a catholic worker community in Tacoma\, WA. They have lived into the hope that the neighborhood brings we what we need. Listening and sharing the gifts that are present to their place. \nThe Catholic Worker hosts people in a time of transition that don’t have a place to live. Liz shares her gifts of gardening\, cooks for community meals and hosts spaces of invitation for others surrounding the community. In the summer\, much of her time is spent on repairing houses\, garden spaces\, and canning and preserving food from the garden. She works alongside many others in these efforts. \n(http://tacomacatholicworker.weebly.com/) \nThe Panel Discussion will be hosted by Matthew Humphrey\, Director of Theological Education at A Rocha Canada. \nThe film (35 minutes in length) raises discussions on the fear of being known\, the pace of life\, and the necessity of hospitality. It presents interviews with N.T. Wright\, Eugene Peterson\, and others who played crucial roles in Matt’s journey. Beautiful scenes from the Scottish countryside make the film a visual feast. \n“God is doing what God is doing in God’s time. And\, maybe\, if we had to slow down a bit\, we might paradoxically catch up with Him.” \nRegistrants will receive complimentary access to the film in order to view it prior to our panel discussion. \nThis event is free and open to the public.
