SUMMARY:God is for the Birds: Celebrating a Creation Care Champion
DESCRIPTION:Learn from John Stott’s passion for birds as part of the lead up to a global birding event in his memory. \nAbout this Event\nJohn Stott is well known as an influential Christian leader of the 20th century. Perhaps less well known is that he was a passionate birder and a keen supporter of A Rocha’s work since its inception. This A Rocha Talk will both highlight Stott’s influence and legacy for creation care today and it will invite you to the joy and wonder of birding. \n \nOne of the marvels of spring is the annual migration of millions of birds. These remarkable creatures give us a window into the intricacies and beauty of creation. They also have much to teach us about the Creator. \nStott took to heart Christ’s exhortation to “consider the birds” and this partly explains why he advocated for the role of creation care in discipleship long before it was commonplace. \nSo where do we start? How do we begin to better appreciate and know these creatures whose presence connects us to so many other people and places? \nJoin our panel as we follow Stott\, who was following Christ\, into the remarkable world of birds. \n\nBob Wismer\, Assistant Rector & Sr. Chaplain at St. Francis School and former Study Assistant to John Stott.\nMichelle Jackson\, Conservation Research Biologist for A Rocha Canada\nDavid Anderson\, Brooksdale Centre Co-Director for A Rocha Canada\nRick Faw\, VP Programming for A Rocha Canada\n\nZoom link will be sent to registrants. \nPLEASE NOTE: The A Rocha Talk will be on May 3. The global birding event to commemorate Stott will be on May 8.

SUMMARY:Ecological Grief and Exploring Hope Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Image Courtesy of Bob Haverluck\, “When God was Flesh and Wild: Stories in Defence of the Earth” (2017 \, Liturgical Press).\nJoin us for a panel discussion on Ecological Grief and Exploring Hope in partnership with Canadian Mennonite University on Wednesday April 28th at 7 pm\, (CST) via zoom. \nThe climate crisis is a pressing matter. As we are witnesses to the many ways the Earth has been exploited and damaged\, how do we hold space for the sorrow\, anger\, and guilt we may feel? Ecological grief is one of the ways of acknowledging and mourning the land\, people\, plants\, and animals which we have lost to climate change. Lament is a powerful communal act that helps us acknowledge sorrow and leads us away from despair. Ultimately\, lament is a profoundly hopeful act that provides us with a way forward\, knowing that change is possible through new ways of being and faith in the God of Creation. Through taking the time to mourn the earth\, we step forward in hope and action towards restoration and new life\, for the land and for ourselves as human beings. \nInspired by an Independent Study on Ecological Grief at Canadian Mennonite University\, Kari Miller\, A Rocha Manitoba’s Environmental Education Coordinator\, will host a discussion exploring our grief and hope for creation amidst the climate crisis. \nSpeakers include: \n\nMarta Bunnett Wiebe – Peace and Advocacy Coordinator with MCC Manitoba\, farmer\, and editor of the new book Germinating Conversations; Stories from a Sustained Rural-Urban Dialogue on Food\, Faith\, and the Land\nBob Haverluck – local artist\, theologian\, and ecological activist who uses storytelling and art to engage issues of violence against the earth and her creatures.\nZoe Matties – Program Manager for A Rocha Manitoba\, and co-founder of Wild Church Winnipeg an emerging community of worship.\nJosiah Neufeld – a local journalist and fiction writer who has spent much time thinking and acting upon the global climate crisis.\n\nThis event is free. Please register below and the zoom link will be sent the day prior to the event.  \n\n\n\n\n\nRecommended Resources\nBetween the Embers and the Stars; A Philosophical Inquiry on the Moral Sense of Nature. SUMMARY:Advent as Spiritual Resistance: Christmas\, COVID\, and Consumerism
DESCRIPTION:Exploring how we might engage Advent and Christmas in ways that care for Creation and resist consumerism in a time of COVID! \nZoom link will be sent to registrants. \nAbout this Event\nWhile this can often be a stressful season filled with large expectations – both social and economic (did you get the office party in our calendar? Do we have an even number of gifts for our siblings or children?!)\, this year we bear a whole different set of stress markers within us as we prepare for Christmas. \nUsually we speak of Advent as a time of waiting – but this year\, we are all a bit tired of waiting! \nSo how do we engage the season of Advent and Christmas this year? How might thinking of this as a time of resistance re-energize us in our care for Creation – and our facing the challenges of this year due to COVID-19? \nJoin our panel as we explore this season of Advent as a preparation for and anticipation of Emmanuel\, God-with-us. \nElisa Leahy\, film-maker  \nElisa Stone Leahy is a Peruvian-American independent filmmaker who was raised in Peru. She studied film in Vancouver\, B.C. where she co-founded Noonday Films. Her company has produced award-winning documentaries about guerrilla gardening in Vancouver\, B.C.\, children with HIV/AIDS in Honduras (Crystal Heart Award\, Heartland Film Festival)\, and elderly activists in the United States (DER Award\, Hot Docs Festival).\n \nMeagan Crosby-Shearer \nMeagan has a passion for creative liturgy\, social justice and engaging ways of entering into our faith story that make them come alive. She loves the wild beauty of the West Coast and learning from her twins Amaya and Zion. She is trained as a Registered Nurse and an ordained priest in the Anglican Church of Canada\, where she shares in leadership at the Abbeychurch and St. Matthias in Victoria\, BC. \nPaul Neufeld\, farmer \nPaul has been growing vegetables as the lead farmer at A Rocha in Surrey for the past 16 years.  He loves the physical work of farming\, the beauty of vegetables\, the limitless possibilities of soil and watching folks get excited about the flavours and challenges of local seasonal eating.  Paul lives (and farms\, along with his wife Angela) at Kingfisher farm\, a 10-acre property which is co-owned by a community of 6 families.

SUMMARY:A Rocha Talks: Earthkeeping in the City - From backyard composting to electric vehicles
DESCRIPTION:Join us to explore the myriad ways that creation care can happen right where you are in the city. \nAbout this event\nA Rocha Canada invites you to join our ongoing series of A Rocha Talks. \nIn North American culture we tend to consider nature as opposite to civilization. We’ve often said nature is where humans are not. But in Genesis humans are created as an intrinsic part of creation. Throughout Scripture all the residents of our earth home\, plants\, animals\, and humans\, share a common\, intertwined past and future. Today\, we see creation flourishing and languishing alongside humans in forests\, alpine meadows\, parks\, suburbs and cities. \nGiven that over 70% of Canada’s population and 55% of the global population lives in cities\, city life has an enormous impact on the earth. How do we learn to live with creation in the ways we eat\, travel\, work and play in our urban homes? How does our faith and the care of the earth come together in an urban setting? \nThis panel will explore how we can engage caring for creation in the city. We will hear how each panellist is navigating this challenge in their own lives. We hope you’ll join us in the conversation! \nOur panelists: \nTeresa Prokopanko (yes\, it’s phonetic) loves dirt and hopes you will too! She is a Compost Program Coordinator at Green Action Centre in her day job\, and is a mom – well\, all the time. Teresa lives in Winnipeg with her husband and toddler daughter. They enjoy discussing city planning\, loafing at the lake\, volunteering at church\, and going on local people-powered adventures together. \nPaul Loewen rides an electric unicycle (google it) to work\, including many days during Winnipeg’s winter last year. He’s well aware that it’ll be hard to convince everyone else to do the same\, and so electric vehicles fall into the overlap between two of his passions: technology and reducing carbon emissions. He lives in Winnipeg with his wife\, Jeanette\, and their three boys. They plan to own an EV within 3-5 years–if people still own their own vehicles by then. \nAndrea Ramos Santos rides her bike as much as she can around Vancouver\, but she is still adapting to the winter in Canada (it’s hard for a Brazilian!). She is passionate about nature\, birds\, and trees\, which lead her to study ecology. She worked for A Rocha in Brazil before moving to Canada with her husband Gustavo. Both studied at Regent College\, and now they are learning how to live as typical Pacific Northwest dwellers. \nThe panel discussion will be hosted by Zoe Matties\, Manitoba Program Manager. \nThis event is free and open to the public.\n \nPowered by Eventbrite
