SUMMARY:A Rocha Talks: The Role of Hope in Environmental Care
DESCRIPTION:Our next A Rocha Talks features Dr. Elin Kelsey\, author of Hope Matters\, on the role of Hope in environmental care. \nAbout this event\nHow do we maintain hope in the face of such an onslaught of bad news about the state of our world? How does what we observe shape our understanding and capacity to care for the world around us? Does having hope mean a blind optimism that leaves no room for sadness or grief? \nOur next A Rocha Talks will take up such questions with Dr. Elin Kelsey\, author of Hope Matters. \nElin Kelsey\, PhD is a scholar\, author and passionate leader in the evidence-based hope and climate change and environmental solutions movement. Her newest book for adults\, Hope Matters: Why Changing the Way We Think Is Critical For Solving The Environmental Crisis was published by Greystone Books in 2020. Her influence can be seen in the hopeful\, solutions-focus of her clients\, including the Monterey Bay Aquarium\, and other powerful institutions where she has served as a visiting fellow including the Rachel Carson Center for the Environment and Society\, the Rockefeller Foundation\, and Stanford University in the Graduate School of Education. In 2022\, she will be taking up a Kone Foundation Fellowship to work with climate science researchers\, the Climate and Environmental Communication Science Association and children’s book writers in Finland on the Developing Climate Change Communication with Emotional Awareness project. Her contribution to environmental engagement through evidence-based hope resulted in her selection as a 2020 finalist in the Canadian Nature Inspiration Awards. \nAs an Adjunct Faculty member of the University of Victoria School of Environmental Studies\, and Western Washington University’s partnership in the Redfish School of Change\, she is championing a new solutions-oriented paradigm for educating environmental scientists and social scientists. Elin co-founded the writing program at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at California State University\, Monterey Bay and has been awarded writer-in-residence posts at: Hedgebrook\, Berton House\, Conservation International\, Arteles and\, Mesa Refuge. Elin is a feature writer and podcast host for Hakai Magazine and a best-selling children’s book author. Her newest book for children\, A Last Goodbye\, was published in April 2020 and is short-listed for the 2021 Silver Birch Express Award. \nElin is a popular keynote speaker and has a track record of inspiring change. This past year\, she co-led a research and engagement initiative that assembled an international community of scholars\, educators\, and climate justice leaders to identify the emotional impact of climate disruption. In May 2021\, she launched the Existential Toolkit for Climate Justice Educators website which showcases an extensive collection of climate change communication resources for enhancing engagement while navigating the climate emergency. In 2014\, she co-created #OceanOptimism\, a twitter campaign to crowd-source marine conservation solutions which has reached more than 100 million shares. The scientific brief she wrote for Pew Global Oceans led former President George W. Bush to dedicate one of the world’s largest marine reserves\, the Mariana Trench National Monument in 2009. She has worked on marine engagement projects and strategies in Britain\, Australia\, Canada\, the U.K.\, and the U.S. She led a coalition of more than 40 aquariums and visitor centers across the U.S. in a multi-year empowerment evaluation of how to better communicate about climate change and its effect on the oceans. That work gave rise to the U.S. national Climate Interpreter network. \nElin holds a Ph.D. in Science Communication through King’s College London. She obtained her Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology (Honours) from the University of Guelph and a Master of Arts in Science Learning in Informal Settings from the University of British Columbia. SUMMARY:Germinating Conversations Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:How do we listen to those who are different from us? \nListening well and holding space for others in a world where we are increasingly defined by our differences is becoming ever more crucial. \nNearly a decade ago\, the Germinating Conversations initiative began nurturing relationships between Manitoba food growers and eaters by paying close attention to the art of listening well. \nGerminating Conversations\, the book\, emerged from that initiative. Join us on June 3rd to celebrate many years of dialogue and relationship building\, as reflected in this new book. Participants of Germinating Conversations will speak to their involvement in the initiative over the years and imagine possibilities for future dialogue and engagement with the new book. \nYou can purchase a copy of the book through CommonWord Bookstore and Resource Centre. \nThis event is supported through a partnership between A Rocha Canada\, Canadian Foodgrains Bank\, Canadian Mennonite University\, and Mennonite Central Committee Manitoba. \n\nPlease register below to get the Zoom link.

SUMMARY:Hope Matters
DESCRIPTION:June book club is reading Elin Kelsey’s “Hope Matters” – Join us! \nAbout this event\n“Hope Matters.” \nAnd yet so often the narratives and messages that dominate public conversation on the environment focus on the threat and doom of inaction as a way of trying to motivate human behaviour. Kelsey draws on a rich interdisciplinary tapestry of research to show how this has failed to create change. She goes on to demonstrate how hope can offer a viable alternative to empower humans to care for the world they know and love. \nWe will bring this book into conversation with Christian theology – asking how a faith perspective can motivate change. Not the simplistic hope of a supernatural cure\, but rather the hope that comes through patiently living the kind of life God has called human beings to. What one might call\, ‘the ecosystem of God.’ \nJoin us on zoom for a rich conversation! \nListen to a CBC interview with Elin here. \nHer book is available from Greystone Books. Check your local independent bookstore\, or online. \nThis event is a partnership with A Rocha Canada and Wild Church Victoria. \n*Description from the publisher* \nWe are at an inflection point: today\, more people than ever before recognize that climate change and biodiversity loss are urgent and existential threats. Yet constant reports of climate doom are fueling an epidemic of eco-anxiety\, leaving many of us feeling hopeless and powerless—and hampering our ability to address the very real challenges we face. \nHope Matters boldly breaks through the narrative of doom and gloom that has overtaken conversations about our future to show why hope\, not fear\, is our most powerful tool for tackling the planetary crisis. Award-winning author\, scholar\, and educator Elin Kelsey reveals the collateral damage of despair—from young people who honestly believe they have no future to the link between climate anxiety and hyper-consumerism—and argues that the catastrophic environmental news that dominates the media tells only part of the story. She describes effective campaigns to support ocean conservation\, species resilience\, and rewilding\, demonstrating how digital conservation is helping scientists target specific problems with impressive results. And she shows how we can build on these positive trends and harness all our emotions about the changing environment—anger and sadness as well as hope—into effective personal and political action.

SUMMARY:God is for the Birds: Celebrating a Creation Care Champion
DESCRIPTION:Learn from John Stott’s passion for birds as part of the lead up to a global birding event in his memory. \nAbout this Event\nJohn Stott is well known as an influential Christian leader of the 20th century. Perhaps less well known is that he was a passionate birder and a keen supporter of A Rocha’s work since its inception. This A Rocha Talk will both highlight Stott’s influence and legacy for creation care today and it will invite you to the joy and wonder of birding. \n \nOne of the marvels of spring is the annual migration of millions of birds. These remarkable creatures give us a window into the intricacies and beauty of creation. They also have much to teach us about the Creator. \nStott took to heart Christ’s exhortation to “consider the birds” and this partly explains why he advocated for the role of creation care in discipleship long before it was commonplace. \nSo where do we start? How do we begin to better appreciate and know these creatures whose presence connects us to so many other people and places? \nJoin our panel as we follow Stott\, who was following Christ\, into the remarkable world of birds. \n\nBob Wismer\, Assistant Rector & Sr. Chaplain at St. Francis School and former Study Assistant to John Stott.\nMichelle Jackson\, Conservation Research Biologist for A Rocha Canada\nDavid Anderson\, Brooksdale Centre Co-Director for A Rocha Canada\nRick Faw\, VP Programming for A Rocha Canada\n\nZoom link will be sent to registrants. \nPLEASE NOTE: The A Rocha Talk will be on May 3. The global birding event to commemorate Stott will be on May 8.

SUMMARY:Ecological Grief and Exploring Hope Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Image Courtesy of Bob Haverluck\, “When God was Flesh and Wild: Stories in Defence of the Earth” (2017 \, Liturgical Press).\nJoin us for a panel discussion on Ecological Grief and Exploring Hope in partnership with Canadian Mennonite University on Wednesday April 28th at 7 pm\, (CST) via zoom. \nThe climate crisis is a pressing matter. As we are witnesses to the many ways the Earth has been exploited and damaged\, how do we hold space for the sorrow\, anger\, and guilt we may feel? Ecological grief is one of the ways of acknowledging and mourning the land\, people\, plants\, and animals which we have lost to climate change. Lament is a powerful communal act that helps us acknowledge sorrow and leads us away from despair. Ultimately\, lament is a profoundly hopeful act that provides us with a way forward\, knowing that change is possible through new ways of being and faith in the God of Creation. Through taking the time to mourn the earth\, we step forward in hope and action towards restoration and new life\, for the land and for ourselves as human beings. \nInspired by an Independent Study on Ecological Grief at Canadian Mennonite University\, Kari Miller\, A Rocha Manitoba’s Environmental Education Coordinator\, will host a discussion exploring our grief and hope for creation amidst the climate crisis. \nSpeakers include: \n\nMarta Bunnett Wiebe – Peace and Advocacy Coordinator with MCC Manitoba\, farmer\, and editor of the new book Germinating Conversations; Stories from a Sustained Rural-Urban Dialogue on Food\, Faith\, and the Land\nBob Haverluck – local artist\, theologian\, and ecological activist who uses storytelling and art to engage issues of violence against the earth and her creatures.\nZoe Matties – Program Manager for A Rocha Manitoba\, and co-founder of Wild Church Winnipeg an emerging community of worship.\nJosiah Neufeld – a local journalist and fiction writer who has spent much time thinking and acting upon the global climate crisis.\n\nThis event is free. Please register below and the zoom link will be sent the day prior to the event.  \n\n\n\n\n\nRecommended Resources\nBetween the Embers and the Stars; A Philosophical Inquiry on the Moral Sense of Nature.
