SUMMARY:Church EarthKeepers Meet-Up (April 2025)
DESCRIPTION:Caleb Cray Haynes blends the heart of a pastor with the passion of a creation care advocate and practitioner. For many years\, he has been equipping God’s people in his writing\, speaking\, and podcasting to explore “what it means to be Christian on planet Earth.” Join us as we learn more about his work\, digging into soil\, and how he incorporates the care of creation into congregational life. \nThis month’s Church Earthkeepers Meetup will take place from 6pm to 7.15pm on Tuesday\, April 29th 2025. \nMore about the Monthly Church Earth keepers Meetup: \nAre you mobilizing your church to care for creation? Do you wish more people shared your interest? Then join like-minded folks for a Church Earth keepers Meet-Up. At these monthly sessions we’ll learn from each other by swapping stories as a way to encourage and equip us to catalyze earth keeping at church. Come prepared to share your ideas and to hear what works for others as we build a network of regular people working to care for creation within a local church setting. \nThese online gatherings will take place the last Tuesday of every month at 5 PM – 6.15 PM Pacific Time (8 PM – 9.15 PM Eastern Time). SUMMARY:Vernal Pools Workshop (Campbellville\, ON)
DESCRIPTION:Join us on April 26th (new date) for our Vernal Pools workshop\, led by local environmental educator and friend of A Rocha Ontario\, Mary-Ann Meyer.\nTogether\, we will explore these ephemeral habitats and their unique species with special adaptations and life histories while taking a hike in the Bruce Trail. We will be meeting at the Bruce Trail Parking Lot on Twiss Rd (7342 Twiss Rd\, Campbellville\, ON) at 10am ET. Our hike will last around 2 hours\, and we ask that you carpool with others as there is limited parking available. \nFor children under the age of 12\, please purchase a children’s ticket. Please note that all children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Please register below. \nUpdate: Please note that this event has been rescheduled to Saturday\, April 26th.\nSliding Scale Pricing\nWe believe in the value of our programs and we know you do too! That’s why we have introduced sliding scale pricing this year; we are happy to have you come at any rate you select. Instead of a fixed fee\, you can choose from one of three fee options when registering: \n\nSubsidized Rate: Choose this one if cost is a barrier to you attending. We are able to offer this option due to the generosity of our supporters\, including donors and grants.\nTrue-Value Rate: This is what we estimate to be a fair cost for the event. It helps us cover costs of staff\, materials\, and other fees associated with running the event.\nPay-It-Forward Rate: Choose this one if you want to invest in the future of A Rocha programming and help others be able to come at the subsidized rate.\n\nBy offering tiered pricing\, we aim to balance affordability with sustainability\, making our programs accessible while also providing participants with an opportunity to support their community. If you have any questions\, please reach out to us at ontario@arocha.ca. \nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Churches Caring for Creation - An Idea Exchange (Hamilton\, ON)
DESCRIPTION:What can churches do to care for creation?\nChristian communities and their leaders are increasingly interested in making creation care a part of the way they serve God and neighbour. At a time of significant polarization and high anxiety\, this isn’t easy. If you would like to hear some of these stories\, stories of what works and what doesn’t\, please join us at St. Cuthbert’s in Westdale (Hamilton\, ON) for a warm afternoon of conversation and encouragement. This event takes place on November 17 from 1:30PM to 3:30PM ET\, and is a collaboration between St. Cuthbert’s\, TrueCity\, and A Rocha Ontario. Anyone interested is welcome to attend–whether you’re in a leadership role or not\, a member of a church or not–please come and join the conversation. \nSchedule\n1:30pm: Welcome & Opening Remarks (including a poetry reading by John Terpstra)\nJohn Terpstra will be reading How it all goes round\, accompanied by Bart Nameth on piano. \n2:00pm: Creation Care Stories with Guest Speakers\nAt this event\, we are excited to welcome guest speakers to open up discussion and share about their creation care experiences. If listing multiple attendees\, please separate names with a comma (ex. John Smith\, Jane Smith).\n\n\nWhat congregation are you from?\n\n\nAny questions or comments?\n\n\n\n\n\nContact Information \n \n \n \nMeet Our Guest Speakers\nDeborah Lindeman\n \nDeborah Lindeman is an avid birdwatcher\, naturalist\, and native plant gardener. She is a member of the Hamilton Naturalists’ Club and volunteers at the Royal Botanical Gardens with their natural land restoration and bird censuses. For the past couple years\, she has participated in the Creation Care group of Trinity Lutheran Church and has used this platform to share her concerns for the preservation and restoration of Hamilton’s natural spaces through articles\, talks\, and birdwatching outings. \nLarry McClung\n \nLarry McClung recently retired from a 44-year career in engineering\, virtually all of which was spent in the fields of energy conservation and renewable energy. Trained at McMaster\, after spending much of his career in Ottawa he now lives in Ancaster\, in a home heated by an air-source heat pump. Some highlights from Larry’s career include designing numerous off-grid solar power systems\, a leading role in the design of the solar-heated Drake Landing Solar Community (Okotoks\, AB\, 2007)\, helping to design Canada’s first Net Zero Energy townhomes (Kanata\, ON\, 2016) and serving as a technical advisor on thousands of MW’s of solar power generation plants across Canada and the United States\, including roughly one-third of the solar power plants now operating in Ontario. \nMark Hartley\n \nWater\, watersheds and all things therein have been an important part of Mark Hartley’s life\, both personally and professionally\, for over 40 years. His life changed dramatically 15 years ago when he started following Christ. As a watershed disciple\, he is passionate about spreading the message (workshops\, discipleship groups) of the immediate need for creation care (delegation\, tragedy\, restoration) and its importance as a gospel issue. \nWayne Poole\n \nWorking in Hamilton-Wentworth Region’s Environment Department in different capacities – water/wastewater lab.\, pollution abatement and pollution prevention outreach – gave Wayne Poole the incentive to continue to promote environmental awareness\, after retirement. \nWayne continued this outreach in his church and formed a group\, the Eco Churches of West Hamilton (EcoWHam)\, with like-minded individuals from other Dundas and West Hamilton churches.  This group collaborated with other environmental organizations – Environment Hamilton\, Hamilton 350\, Environmental Defence\, and others\, to take the environment message to our member congregations\, the Association of Dundas Churches\, and the greater community.  COVID brought about the dissolution of EcoWHam\, but Dundas churches carry on the message of environmental/climate change awareness. \nThe greatest challenge and frustration for Wayne has been climate change denial and indifference\, by so many\, towards this existential threat.

Creation is often a source of inspiration for Megan\, whether through seeing more deeping when plein air painting or experiencing the journey of faith through the metaphors provided by the natural world.  \nwww.meganlittleart.com \nJohn Terpstra (Panelist)\nJohn Terpstra is a Hamilton poet\, writer and cabinetmaker. He is the author of ten books of poetry and four books of non-fiction. He often plays in that zone where human beings interact with nature – nature in the city\, not the country. The nature he gravitates toward is one that has some experience of us\, has had to live with us and our demands\, and is no longer pure or whole or perfect\, but still somehow manages to be itself – maybe even more than when it was “wild.” He is interested in how natural geography and built geography integrate and relate to each other. His most recent book\, Daylighting Chedoke\, is about a creek that runs beneath the streets of the city. One of his poems\, called “Giants\,” is mounted on a plaque that overlooks downtown Hamilton from the top of the Niagara Escarpment. \nwww.johnterpstra.com \nDiana Scholtens (Panelist)\nDiana Scholtens is a fibre artist and printmaker whose work is deeply rooted in her love for the natural world. Her artistic inspiration is drawn from the intricate connections between native flora and fauna\, and she expresses this relationship through her unique approach to textile art. Recently\, she has expanded her artistic horizons by experimenting with natural dyes and repurposed fabrics\, demonstrating a commitment to sustainable and eco-friendly practices. She does this to showcase an intimate interplay between the materials she uses and the subjects she portrays. At the thematic core of Diana’s work lies the biblical call to be ‘stewards of the garden.’ This theme serves as the guiding principle for her medium choices\, artistic practices\, and subject matter. As an artist\, she is committed to continuously evaluating the narrative she communicates through her creations\, striving to strike a balance between creativity and conscientious consideration of the ecological impact of her art. Through her art\, Diana Scholtens invites viewers to contemplate their role as stewards of the garden and encourages a deeper understanding of our interconnectedness with the environment. \ndiana.scholtens16@gmail.com \nRegister Below\n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n \n \n\nFor the Beauty of the Earth - Registration (ARON)\n\nRegistration for this event is free!
