DESCRIPTION:Join us to explore the myriad ways that creation care can happen right where you are in the city. \nAbout this event\nA Rocha Canada invites you to join our ongoing series of A Rocha Talks. \nIn North American culture we tend to consider nature as opposite to civilization. We’ve often said nature is where humans are not. But in Genesis humans are created as an intrinsic part of creation. Throughout Scripture all the residents of our earth home\, plants\, animals\, and humans\, share a common\, intertwined past and future. Today\, we see creation flourishing and languishing alongside humans in forests\, alpine meadows\, parks\, suburbs and cities. \nGiven that over 70% of Canada’s population and 55% of the global population lives in cities\, city life has an enormous impact on the earth. How do we learn to live with creation in the ways we eat\, travel\, work and play in our urban homes? How does our faith and the care of the earth come together in an urban setting? \nThis panel will explore how we can engage caring for creation in the city. We will hear how each panellist is navigating this challenge in their own lives. We hope you’ll join us in the conversation! \nOur panelists: \nTeresa Prokopanko (yes\, it’s phonetic) loves dirt and hopes you will too! She is a Compost Program Coordinator at Green Action Centre in her day job\, and is a mom – well\, all the time. Teresa lives in Winnipeg with her husband and toddler daughter. They enjoy discussing city planning\, loafing at the lake\, volunteering at church\, and going on local people-powered adventures together. \nPaul Loewen rides an electric unicycle (google it) to work\, including many days during Winnipeg’s winter last year. He’s well aware that it’ll be hard to convince everyone else to do the same\, and so electric vehicles fall into the overlap between two of his passions: technology and reducing carbon emissions. He lives in Winnipeg with his wife\, Jeanette\, and their three boys. They plan to own an EV within 3-5 years–if people still own their own vehicles by then. \nAndrea Ramos Santos rides her bike as much as she can around Vancouver\, but she is still adapting to the winter in Canada (it’s hard for a Brazilian!). She is passionate about nature\, birds\, and trees\, which lead her to study ecology. She worked for A Rocha in Brazil before moving to Canada with her husband Gustavo. In contrast to a maze that has dead ends and choices to make along the way\, a labyrinth is a single path to the centre. \nInstead of a pilgrimage to Jerusalem\, or the Camino de Santiago\, medieval churches started to create labyrinths that parishioners could use closer to home. Whether inlaid in stone in the sanctuary or courtyard\, or crafted into a garden\, faithful seekers could easily access it. \nStart your labyrinth walk by setting an intention. Perhaps it’s a very specific question for God/Spirit/Creator\, perhaps it’s a music lyric that has been stuck in your head\, maybe a line of Scripture that inspires or troubles you. It might be a deep breath alongside “what do you want me to hear/see/ponder today.” It could be a decision you’re wrestling with\, or a person you are having a hard time forgiving. \nAnd then deliberately walk towards the centre. If you’re walking with others\, there will be some shuffling as you pass one another. Take note of what your senses are telling you. Maybe you repeat your intention as a mantra to stay focused\, maybe you free your mind to safely wander the path that your intention has set. \nOnce you come to the centre\, do what feels right. Close your eyes\, whisper a prayer\, leave a rock or flower\, pause a moment. Maybe you add a layer to your intention\, a follow up question\, or a repeat of the initial question. \nAnd then walk back out\, taking note of when you make the final step. \nIf the labyrinth is grass or sand\, consider walking it barefoot. If it’s in a public place\, determine whether it seems safe to leave your jacket/bag/extras on the ground and walk unencumbered. DESCRIPTION:As part of its mandate to care for creation\, A Rocha Manitoba is seeking to run a trial of a “Christmas Bird Count” (CBC) in the vicinity of the Boreal Ecology Centre in East Braintree\, Manitoba this coming January 3\, 2020.  We are seeking participants who have an interest in birds and who would be willing to commit to being part of bird-observing teams driving and walking routes in the area from approximately 8:30am-4:30pm. Dinner at the lodge to follow.  \nWe are seeking two categories of participants\, all who must be willing to be outside for most of the day (combination of some driving\, and frequent stops and longer walks – and times for snack breaks and lunch for course!) \n\n1) Participants who are able to assist with recording observations on CBC forms\, pointing out potential birds\, driving\, managing snacks in a vehicle etc. but who may not be confident to accurately identify birds \n\n2) Participants who are confident to be able to identify by sight and sound most of the bird species we could encounter in East Braintree. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a week of exploration July 15-19!\nWe are partnering with Metanoia Farmers at Canadian Mennonite University to offer a week of Farm and Forest experience for kids! Children will discover new life up close in the farmyard and learn wilderness skills in the Assiniboine Forest next door. DESCRIPTION:Join us at Assiniboine Forest for a hike in one of the largest urban forests in Canada! The Assiniboine forest is home to a great variety of birds\, animals\, and plants. As we walk we will learn how to identify some of these plants and animals. \nCome explore the unique beauty and wonder located in the forest and enjoy some gelato at Folio Cafe with friends new and old. \nMeet outside Folio Cafe at 7:00 pm\, hike begins at 7:15. DESCRIPTION:At the edge of the Boreal Forest we are launching an environmental and retreat centre: a living lab composed of 220 acres of forests\, meadow and river valley. Come experience the warmth and wildness of creation at the Boreal Ecology Centre. \nSchedule: \nJuly 14th optional overnight with early morning birdwalk (see below) \nJuly 15th Day Time \n10-12 am – Outdoor activities and Kids activities\n12-1 pm – Lunch (Please bring a $5 donation)\n1:30 pm – Tour\n2-3 pm – Volunteer planting around the Lodge\n3-4 pm – Outdoor activities\n4 pm – Depart \nDirections to get to the Centre: Here\nOptional overnight available!\nLet us know if you’d like to spend a night at the lodge. Bring a $5 donation for a simple meal and we’ll enjoy a leisurely picnic lunch together. \nOptional overnight available! Let us know if you’d like to spend a night at the lodge. May 10-11. DESCRIPTION:“In the morning\, while it was still very dark\, he [Jesus] got up and went out to a deserted place\, and there he prayed” – Mark 1:35 \nMany of us plan to set aside time to pray and listen in the stillness\, but find that in our good intentions we forget or simply don’t follow through. You can join a cohort of fellow pilgrims to set aside time during each season this year (Fall\, Winter\, Spring & Summer). By joining you will be guided into a generous space of silence\, prayer and listening with the intention of connecting and becoming more aware of God’s presence and love. \nSilence in the Seasons Retreat series is intended to create space for people to come away from the busyness and demands of day-to-day life. Become still and aware of God’s presence as we listen in the place of the boreal forest over the seasons. DESCRIPTION:There’s more to birds than meets the eye; bird “watching” is only a half baked pie! \nJoin us for food and conversation with Mark Huebert\, who will share with us about his love of birds. \n \nMark Huebert flew to Malaysia to win the hand of his lovebird (and wife) Neena.  They have two nestlings\, ages 6 and 8. Mark grew up in St. Vital and while earning his way through university spent about 5 months (over 5 different years) doing bird monitoring work in the boreal forests of southern Manitoba.
