SUMMARY:Germinating Conversations: What is a sustainable diet? (Brandon/online)
DESCRIPTION:The best information currently available indicates that the food chain – production\, processing and transportation\, is a large source of greenhouse gas emissions. In the media we often hear that if we want to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions\, thus avoiding catastrophic climate change\, one of the best things we can do is stop eating meat and switch to plant based diets. A wonderfully simple solution! \nIs it too simple? Maybe “what to eat” is not the only important question. Where was it grown? How was it grown? What are the broader impacts on the health of the soil\, the water\, the air – the whole biosphere? \nThose of us who consume food\, in other words all of us\, have a role to play in making human life sustainable on this planet\, our only home. In order to make good decisions about the food we consume we need good information. Who better to help inform us than those who are active in producing the food we eat?! \nTo that end the Knox United Green Team\, in co-operation with the “Germinating Conversations” dialogue initiative\, are hosting a night of education featuring 4 local farmers with varying perspective on and practices of food production who will talk about what sustainability means to them and how they embody that in their farming practices. \nWhy not host a watch party and gather your friends to watch this event and then have your own discussion? \nWhere: Knox United Church\, Brandon\, [451-18th Street\, use the 17th Street entrance]\nLivestream of the event will be provided on the Knox Konnection YouTube channel. \nWhen: April 7th\, 7-8:30pm with time for refreshments and conversation following \nWho: The Germinating Conversations initiative nurtures relationships between Manitoba food growers and eaters by paying close attention to the art of listening well. This event is supported through a partnership between A Rocha Canada\, Canadian Foodgrains Bank\, Canadian Mennonite University\, and Mennonite Central Committee Manitoba. \nRegarding Covid19:  Current Covid protocol at Knox include a recommendation to wear masks and be socially distanced

SUMMARY:Christmas Bird Count (East Braintree\, Manitoba)
DESCRIPTION:Due to current provincial restrictions\, this event is now full.  \nDo you love birding? Are you excited about citizen science? \nOur annual Christmas bird count is coming up at the Boreal Ecology Centre in East Braintree on December 30.  \nBring warm clothes\, binoculars\, a camera (if you have one)\, and snacks (we will provide lunch). Please also bring what you feel you need to hike winter trails (snow pants\, hiking poles\, etc.) \nHere’s what Birds Canada has to say about their Christmas Bird Count:  \nStarted in 1900\, the Christmas Bird Count is North America’s longest-running Citizen Science project. Counts happen in over 2000 localities throughout the Western Hemisphere. \nThe information collected by thousands of volunteer participants forms one of the world’s largest sets of wildlife survey data. The results are used daily by conservation biologists and naturalists to assess the population trends and distribution of birds. \nEach Christmas Bird Count is conducted on a single day between December 14 and January 5. Counts are carried out within a 24-km diameter circle that stays the same from year to year. They are organized\, usually as group efforts\, at the local level\, often by a birding club or naturalist organization. \nThis is a great opportunity to explore the birds that we have in and around the Boreal Ecology Centre and engage people in conducting citizen science. This is part of the work that we want to take on in order to promote connections at the Boreal Ecology Centre that can contribute to conservation. \nIf you have questions\, please reach out to Graham Peters directly by emailing graham.peters@arocha.ca .\nEmail to register!×Register here\n ×RSVPClose404\nSorry\, an error occurred.\n\n\n	Sorry\, this form has been permanently removed.\n\n\n\nClose

SUMMARY:Germinating Conversations: What's for Dinner? Eating in an age of climate emergency
DESCRIPTION:What’s for dinner? Eating in an age of climate emergency\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nAs global leaders prepare for COP26\, the United Nations Climate Change Conference\, Manitobans are facing the effects of one of the hottest and driest summers on record. Farmers across the province struggled with crop failure\, feeding livestock\, water shortages\, and wildfires. As a result\, prices for food have increased\, while food banks have noticed an uptick in clients. The climate emergency has reached our backyards. The ways we eat and dispose of food are leading causes. In the face of this reality\, how do we answer the question\, “what’s for dinner?” \nThe Germinating Conversations initiative nurtures relationships between Manitoba food growers and eaters by paying close attention to the art of listening well. \nPARTICIPANTS: Will Bergmann\, Cathy Campbell\, Nathaniel De Avila\, Carol Thiessen \nFORMAT: Livestreamed dialogue (live event by invitation only) \nWHEN: Wednesday November 3\, 7PM CDT \nYou can purchase a copy of the Germinating Conversations book through CommonWord Bookstore and Resource Centre. \nThis event is supported through a partnership between A Rocha Canada\, Canadian Foodgrains Bank\, Canadian Mennonite University\, and Mennonite Central Committee Manitoba.

SUMMARY:Germinating Conversations Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:How do we listen to those who are different from us? \nListening well and holding space for others in a world where we are increasingly defined by our differences is becoming ever more crucial. \nNearly a decade ago\, the Germinating Conversations initiative began nurturing relationships between Manitoba food growers and eaters by paying close attention to the art of listening well. \nGerminating Conversations\, the book\, emerged from that initiative. Join us on June 3rd to celebrate many years of dialogue and relationship building\, as reflected in this new book. Participants of Germinating Conversations will speak to their involvement in the initiative over the years and imagine possibilities for future dialogue and engagement with the new book. \nYou can purchase a copy of the book through CommonWord Bookstore and Resource Centre. \nThis event is supported through a partnership between A Rocha Canada\, Canadian Foodgrains Bank\, Canadian Mennonite University\, and Mennonite Central Committee Manitoba. \n\nPlease register below to get the Zoom link.

SUMMARY:Ecological Grief and Exploring Hope Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Image Courtesy of Bob Haverluck\, “When God was Flesh and Wild: Stories in Defence of the Earth” (2017 \, Liturgical Press).\nJoin us for a panel discussion on Ecological Grief and Exploring Hope in partnership with Canadian Mennonite University on Wednesday April 28th at 7 pm\, (CST) via zoom. \nThe climate crisis is a pressing matter. As we are witnesses to the many ways the Earth has been exploited and damaged\, how do we hold space for the sorrow\, anger\, and guilt we may feel? Ecological grief is one of the ways of acknowledging and mourning the land\, people\, plants\, and animals which we have lost to climate change. Lament is a powerful communal act that helps us acknowledge sorrow and leads us away from despair. Ultimately\, lament is a profoundly hopeful act that provides us with a way forward\, knowing that change is possible through new ways of being and faith in the God of Creation. Through taking the time to mourn the earth\, we step forward in hope and action towards restoration and new life\, for the land and for ourselves as human beings. \nInspired by an Independent Study on Ecological Grief at Canadian Mennonite University\, Kari Miller\, A Rocha Manitoba’s Environmental Education Coordinator\, will host a discussion exploring our grief and hope for creation amidst the climate crisis. \nSpeakers include: \n\nMarta Bunnett Wiebe – Peace and Advocacy Coordinator with MCC Manitoba\, farmer\, and editor of the new book Germinating Conversations; Stories from a Sustained Rural-Urban Dialogue on Food\, Faith\, and the Land\nBob Haverluck – local artist\, theologian\, and ecological activist who uses storytelling and art to engage issues of violence against the earth and her creatures.\nZoe Matties – Program Manager for A Rocha Manitoba\, and co-founder of Wild Church Winnipeg an emerging community of worship.\nJosiah Neufeld – a local journalist and fiction writer who has spent much time thinking and acting upon the global climate crisis.\n\nThis event is free. Please register below and the zoom link will be sent the day prior to the event.  \n\n\n\n\n\nRecommended Resources\nBetween the Embers and the Stars; A Philosophical Inquiry on the Moral Sense of Nature. SUMMARY:A Rocha Talks: Earthkeeping in the City - From backyard composting to electric vehicles
DESCRIPTION:Join us to explore the myriad ways that creation care can happen right where you are in the city. \nAbout this event\nA Rocha Canada invites you to join our ongoing series of A Rocha Talks. \nIn North American culture we tend to consider nature as opposite to civilization. We’ve often said nature is where humans are not. But in Genesis humans are created as an intrinsic part of creation. Throughout Scripture all the residents of our earth home\, plants\, animals\, and humans\, share a common\, intertwined past and future. Today\, we see creation flourishing and languishing alongside humans in forests\, alpine meadows\, parks\, suburbs and cities. \nGiven that over 70% of Canada’s population and 55% of the global population lives in cities\, city life has an enormous impact on the earth. How do we learn to live with creation in the ways we eat\, travel\, work and play in our urban homes? How does our faith and the care of the earth come together in an urban setting? \nThis panel will explore how we can engage caring for creation in the city. We will hear how each panellist is navigating this challenge in their own lives. We hope you’ll join us in the conversation! \nOur panelists: \nTeresa Prokopanko (yes\, it’s phonetic) loves dirt and hopes you will too! She is a Compost Program Coordinator at Green Action Centre in her day job\, and is a mom – well\, all the time. Teresa lives in Winnipeg with her husband and toddler daughter. They enjoy discussing city planning\, loafing at the lake\, volunteering at church\, and going on local people-powered adventures together. \nPaul Loewen rides an electric unicycle (google it) to work\, including many days during Winnipeg’s winter last year. He’s well aware that it’ll be hard to convince everyone else to do the same\, and so electric vehicles fall into the overlap between two of his passions: technology and reducing carbon emissions. He lives in Winnipeg with his wife\, Jeanette\, and their three boys. They plan to own an EV within 3-5 years–if people still own their own vehicles by then. \nAndrea Ramos Santos rides her bike as much as she can around Vancouver\, but she is still adapting to the winter in Canada (it’s hard for a Brazilian!). She is passionate about nature\, birds\, and trees\, which lead her to study ecology. She worked for A Rocha in Brazil before moving to Canada with her husband Gustavo. Both studied at Regent College\, and now they are learning how to live as typical Pacific Northwest dwellers. \nThe panel discussion will be hosted by Zoe Matties\, Manitoba Program Manager. \nThis event is free and open to the public.\n \nPowered by Eventbrite
