But so often the solutions feel out of reach. What can “little-old-me” do in the face of such a complex web of global\, interconnected problems? In this A Rocha Talk we’ll hear from people that have used the weight of ecological concerns to fuel action and engagement. Learn how you\, too\, can join in responding to the groaning of creation and the renewal of all things. \nWe will converse with: \n\nLowell Bliss\, a missionary with more than 15 years of experience in mobilizing Christians in climate actions\, the co-funding director of Christian Climate Observers Program (CCOP) and the Climate Intercessors initiative.\nPeter Fargo\, a national park manager turned climate advocate in recent years\, and now the co-founder of Climate Vigil.\nEllie Auton-Strolz\, a former intern at A Rocha’s Brooksdale Centre\, currently studying at UBC. She participated at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Glasgow UK last November through CCOP.

Whether you are a novice or an expert birder\, we invite you to join friends old and new to head into the great outdoors and enjoy the birds wherever you are in God’s good creation. For more information on this day check out the John Stott Birding Day website. \nA Rocha Manitoba will be heading out to the Boreal Ecology Centre for the day to do some recreational birding\, have an outdoor picnic lunch together\, and walk the trails.  \nWhen: May 14\, 2021 – 9 am – 5 pm (although you are welcome to come earlier!)\nWhere: Boreal Ecology Centre (East Braintree\, MB) \nOur aim will be to walk as many of the trails on the property as we can\, so be sure to come equipped with proper hiking gear. We’re looking for willing volunteers with a keen understanding of maps and measurement.\nWHAT: Graham (Conservation Science Coordinator) along with a group of volunteers will be spending the day setting up monitoring sites\, called quadrats\, in various places around The Boreal Ecology Centre property.\nWHERE: The Boreal Ecology Centre\, 81025 Boggy River Rd.\, East Braintree\, MB\nWHEN: Saturday\, April 30\, arriving between 9 and 10 AM\, departing between 3 and 5 PM\nWHY: See Graham’s recent blog post about quadrats – it’s a great explanation of the importance of quadrats.\nWHAT TO BRING:\n\nEssentials: bag lunch (snacks\, waterbottle etc.)\, work boots and gloves\, bug spray and sunscreen\, binoculars\nOptional (bring it to share if you have it): GPS\, compass\, tape measure\, mallet\, coloured markers and pencils\, tree corer\, any relevant plant/animal ID books\nWe are also looking for donations of rebar and cedar stakes – if you have these items and are willing to part with them\, email Graham. \n\n\nRSVP: Fill out the form below to register. DESCRIPTION:The best information currently available indicates that the food chain – production\, processing and transportation\, is a large source of greenhouse gas emissions. In the media we often hear that if we want to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions\, thus avoiding catastrophic climate change\, one of the best things we can do is stop eating meat and switch to plant based diets. A wonderfully simple solution! \nIs it too simple? Maybe “what to eat” is not the only important question. Where was it grown? How was it grown? What are the broader impacts on the health of the soil\, the water\, the air – the whole biosphere? \nThose of us who consume food\, in other words all of us\, have a role to play in making human life sustainable on this planet\, our only home. In order to make good decisions about the food we consume we need good information. Who better to help inform us than those who are active in producing the food we eat?! \nTo that end the Knox United Green Team\, in co-operation with the “Germinating Conversations” dialogue initiative\, are hosting a night of education featuring 4 local farmers with varying perspective on and practices of food production who will talk about what sustainability means to them and how they embody that in their farming practices. \nWhy not host a watch party and gather your friends to watch this event and then have your own discussion? \nWhere: Knox United Church\, Brandon\, [451-18th Street\, use the 17th Street entrance]\nLivestream of the event will be provided on the Knox Konnection YouTube channel. \nWhen: April 7th\, 7-8:30pm with time for refreshments and conversation following \nWho: The Germinating Conversations initiative nurtures relationships between Manitoba food growers and eaters by paying close attention to the art of listening well. Are you excited about citizen science? \nOur annual Christmas bird count is coming up at the Boreal Ecology Centre in East Braintree on December 30.  \nBring warm clothes\, binoculars\, a camera (if you have one)\, and snacks (we will provide lunch). Please also bring what you feel you need to hike winter trails (snow pants\, hiking poles\, etc.) \nHere’s what Birds Canada has to say about their Christmas Bird Count:  \nStarted in 1900\, the Christmas Bird Count is North America’s longest-running Citizen Science project. Counts happen in over 2000 localities throughout the Western Hemisphere. \nThe information collected by thousands of volunteer participants forms one of the world’s largest sets of wildlife survey data. The results are used daily by conservation biologists and naturalists to assess the population trends and distribution of birds. \nEach Christmas Bird Count is conducted on a single day between December 14 and January 5. Counts are carried out within a 24-km diameter circle that stays the same from year to year. They are organized\, usually as group efforts\, at the local level\, often by a birding club or naturalist organization. \nThis is a great opportunity to explore the birds that we have in and around the Boreal Ecology Centre and engage people in conducting citizen science.
