DESCRIPTION:Join us for an engaging 2 days of fun on the farm!\nDo you want to learn about traditional farm activities? Get your hands dirty in the soil planting and harvesting fresh vegetables for the seniors in our community\, bake flatbread in the cob oven\, make beautiful creations with sheep’s wool\, and much more! \n\nKids ages 6 – 12 (Must be finished kindergarten)\nCamp runs from 9am to 3pm\nCome dressed for activities outside (rain or shine). Bring a hat and sunscreen!\nBring your own snacks (morning and afternoon)\, lunch & water bottle.\n\nHow to Register \nRegistration is a 3-step process: \n1. Sign up\, and make payment through Eventbrite. \n2. Download and complete the Day Camp Registration Form and Parent Information & Agreement Form. (Note: You don’t have to submit the forms if your child has attended one of our 2020 Summer Day Camps.) \n3.  Return forms by Tuesday Sept 1\, 2020. Please email them to  canada.kids@arocha.ca \nIMPORTANT: Your registration is NOT considered complete until we have received the registration form containing medical information and waiver. The form must be received at least 1 week prior to camp start date. \nCANCELLATIONS & REFUNDS:  If a camp is cancelled due to Covid-19 provincial health requirements\, all camp fees will be fully refunded to affected families. \nFamilies withdrawing a child’s registration with  more than one week’s notice will be refunded minus the Eventbrite administrative fee. DESCRIPTION:Learn about the lost thrifty art of cooking stewing hens.Two generations ago\, most individuals living on farms ate their laying hens when they stopped laying. Normal meat birds are slaughtered at 14 weeks of age. They are young and tender. However\, laying hens live for 1-3 years\, meaning special care is needed to soften their meat and make it more palatable. In a world of increasing interest in food security\, stewing hens are a great source of protein\, and are a much cheaper option for chicken meat than regular meat birds. \nIn this workshop you will learn \n\nAbout the history of stewing hens\,\nHow to break down a bird into its parts (a transferable skill for meat birds too)\,\nHow to use all the parts of the bird\,\nAnd several methods for cooking stewing hens.\n\nYou will also have the opportunity to sample stewing hen meat prepared in several ways\, learning on your tongue how different cooking methods affect the bird on your palate. \nIncluded in the cost of the workshop is one stewing hen that participants will take home. \nAbout the Instructor\nJenn Cline is an amalgamate farmer-chef\, the perfect individual to guide you \n \nthrough a farm to fork cookery lesson on stewing hens. As a Farmer with six years of experience\, she knows that not all chickens are created equal\, and that caring about the chicken you eat means caring about the plants\, soil and watershed that grow your chicken. As a trained Chef with eight years of professional cooking experience\, she knows a thing or two about transforming quality raw ingredients into a feast for our senses and nourishment for our minds and bodies. Join our conservation team for a morning of hands-on habitat restoration work. \nOur efforts are focused on removing invasive vegetation and replanting native species. Projects are conducted at the A Rocha Canada Brooksdale Centre as well as off site in the surrounding watershed. \nCome prepared for the weather with rain gear and boots to get muddy in. Or if the sun is shining bring hats and sun glasses. Working gloves\, shovels\, clippers and other equipment will be provided. \nWe meet at 9:30 am in the parking lot at the A Rocha Brooksdale Centre in front of the Kiosk.
